Improvement Pill here!
The last time I came back to my hometown in New York city,
a good friend of mine made a really witty remark.
He said: “You know, it’s almost like you are visiting New York
every time you come back,
because you are never here.”
And this made me chuckle because it’s kind of true.
Over the course of the last two years,
I’ve traveled to over a dozen or so different countries,
spending anywhere from two weeks to two months
in each location almost always by myself, and I love it.
I personally believe that
it’s a very powerful experience that everyone should try out,
especially if you are someone who is interested in self-improvement,
because of a very unique benefit that comes along with it.
Let me explain. One of the most overly used pieces of advice
that I see people throwing around in the self-improvement field is
to quote unquote “just be yourself”.
And I couldn’t agree more. You should be yourself.
But do you even know who you truly are?
See, from the moment you were born into this world,
you are pressured to act in a certain way.
Almost like an actor who is forced to play a certain role in a movie.
Your parents, teachers and childhood friends
all pressure you to act this way and that way.
They transfer their ideas and expectations onto you.
And because of this,
you develop a certain personality,
or as I like to call it, you put on a certain mask.
Now, the problem here isn’t the mask.
Everyone wears a mask. It’s normal.
It’s how you act, your values, your beliefs.
那是你的行为 价值观 信仰
It’s essentially the role you play in this movie of yours called life.
The problem is: is this really the right mask for you?
Is this the role you are truly meant to play in your movie?
Is this who you truly are?
I don’t think so,
because there are literally hundreds of different masks out there,
hundreds of different ways of behaving,
and the only way you can really figure out who you really are
is by trying on as many masks as possible
by playing different roles and seeing what components of each role
you genuinely enjoy and combine them all together.
For example, let’s say you’re an actor who has spent his entire career
only playing the role of the funny pothead in movies.
How would he know for sure that
this is the role he enjoys playing the most.
Unless he’s tried out other roles.
What if it turns out he actually enjoys playing the more serious roles?
He would never know unless he gives those a shot.
What I’m trying to say is that
it’s extremely important for you to try on different masks,
so that you can figure out who you truly are.
The problem is it’s hard to try on a new mask
when you are in an environment that doesn’t change,
when you’ve been acting in the same movie.
Right? It’s hard for an actor who’s playing a certain character
to drastically change in that same movie.
For example, the Johnny Depp who plays
Jack Sparrow the Pirate in Pirates of the Caribbean
can’t suddenly change into the Johnny Depp
who plays Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber in the same movie.
That wouldn’t make any sense.
The viewers would be confused.
That movie would get horrible ratings.
The same principle applies in real life.
If you’re someone who has been known as the shy, nerdy guy his entire life,
and you suddenly decide, okay,
now I’m going to be the outgoing and charismatic guy,
you are going to face a lot of backlash.
Your friends, family and coworkers aren’t used to you acting this way.
So the moment they see you attempting to put on a new mask,
they’ll say things like,
“Why are you acting so weird?
“Are you high?”
“Stop trying so hard.”
which will make it very hard for you to continue trying out this new role.
But the worst offender of all is going to be yourself.
You’re going to feel as if you are faking it.
This is where the Imposter Syndrome comes from.
If your environment hasn’t changed at all,
if the setting and all the characters in your movie are still the same,
then it’s gonna be very hard for you to act differently
because you feel like you are supposed to
play the shy guy in this movie.
It’s not impossible for you to change in these situations,
but it will take a long time
and it will be an uphill battle.
Now, on the other hand, when you travel by yourself,
all of these limitations go out the window.
When you are in a distant land where the setting is different,
where all the characters are different
where, heck, even the language is different,
you are essentially in another movie.
And because of this, you can put on any mask you want.
You can play a new role
without having to face any backlash what so ever
because no one knows you.
So whatever you present yourself as initially, they’ll believe.
They’ll think to themselves,
“Oh, okay, now this guy right here is obviously an outgoing person.”
They’ll actually start to think it’s weird
if you choose to revert back to your previous mask.
They’ll say things like,
“Why are you acting so shy and reserved today?”
“Is there something wrong?”
And this form of pressure will actually push you to stick to your new role.
I personally found it extremely easy to
try on new masks,
to act in very different ways
when I was overseas in foreign countries.
And because of that,
I was able to learn so much about who I truly was as a person.
And the best part about this is
when you finally come home from your trip,
you’ll take some of those things you’ve learned
from your travels and bring them back with you,
and people you know actually won’t be too surprised if you do.
Right? It’s kind of expected that
you return from a trip slightly different.
They might say something like,
“Oh, you act a bit more mature now.”
But in reality, it’s not that.
It’s just that you know who you truly are now.
