#### 一周为什么有七天？

Why Do We Have Days Of The Week?

Hey, there.Welcome to Life Noggin.

As you were watching this video, time is ticking away,

Seconds of your life are passing.

And by the end of this video,

a couple of minutes will have gone by.

Some units of time make sense.

A day is a time it takes for the Earth to rotate once on its axis.

A month is a time it takes for the Moon

to orbit around the Earth once.

And a year is a time to take for the Earth

to orbit around the sun once.

What about other units that don’t have a clear definition?

Like seconds or days?

Can I just make up my own unit of time or use it instead？

Sure I can, I can say that a glob of time

is equal to the time that takes me to wake up in the morning.

But no one is gonna to use that unit.

because it changes and it’s specific to just me.

So we have to use something else.

Going back in time (pun intended)to 1500BC,

The ancient Egyptians used sundials

that devided the time between sunrise and sunset

into twelve equal intervals.

During the dark hours between sunset and sunrise,

the time is also splited into twelve intervals,

By tracting the appearance of certain stars in the sky.

combining these together, one day has twenty-four time slices,

which we call hours.

Meanwhile in 2000 BC,

The Babylonians used the base sixty numbering system

to make astronomical calculations.

This means that they used numbers like one, sixty and

3,600 to count.

Similarly to how we use one,

ten and one hundred in our mind base ten numbering system.

Using this base sixty system,

Minutes and seconds were created

Which were eventually used in clocks in the sixteen century.

So we can explain the day pretty well

with all of these terms, but what about weeks?

Once again, we can trace this back to the Babylonians.
7对于他们来说是一个神秘的数字
Seven was a mystical number for them.

This represented the seven heavenly body who included the sun,

moon and five planets.

Also the Babylonians seem to have tracked the differences of the moon

and found they changed about every seven days or so.

The seven days system is also popular in jewish civilizations.

But it wasn’t until 321 A.D. that the Roman emperor

Constantine made the seven-day week official.

Most of the days are named after Norse gods.

Thor for Thursday, Forya for Friday.

However the Romans got to name one,

And this one is arguably one of the best

days of the week – Saturday

It is named after Saturn got fertility

agriculture and coincidentally time.

So really the whole seven days of week thing is just tradition.

It could be any other abitrary number,

but our ancestors decided on seven.

But tell us, how long would you like the week to be?

And if you come up with a new name for a day,

What would it be?

Make sure you come back every monday and Thursday for brand new videos.

I am Lacle, this is been LIFE NOGGIN.

Don’t forget to keep on thinking it.
