Why Are Black Cats Considered Bad Luck
The belief that black cats are somehow bad luck has enjoyed for centuries.
Black cats were always a cause of superstitions, fear or even considered bad luck.
事实上 在早期埃及时期 人们很尊崇猫 包括黑猫
In fact, in early Egyption times, cats including black ones were worshiped,
and killing one was considered a capital crime.
It wasn’t until the Middle Ages in Europe
that the reputation of black cats started to go downhill
as they began to be associated with so-called witches.
The hysteria of witches practicing black magic had just hit Europe.
and alley cats were often cared for and fed by the poor lonely old ladies
later accused of witchery.
她们的猫伴侣——其中一些是黑猫 则受到牵连 被认为是罪恶的
Their cat companions, some of which were black, were deemed guilty by association.
Then this belief was taken up a notch when a folklore involving a father and son
in Lincolnshire, England in the 1570s started making the rounds.
They were said to have been travelling one moonless night
when a black cat crossed their path and dove into a crawl space.
Naturally they did what people do
and pelted the cat with rock until the helpless, injured creature
scrurried into a woman’s house,
who at the time was suspected to have been a witch.
Then next day the father and son saw the same woman
and she was limping and bruised
which of course in that time in minds was more than a coincidence.
So from that day on in Lincolnshire,
it was believed that witches could turn into black cats at night
to prowl the streets unobserved.
This belief crossed Atlantic with the first American settlers
and was a firmly held superstition in American during the Salem witch hunts.
Even today the association of black cats and some witches
holds strong during Halloween celebrations despite the holiday’s religious beginnings.
The once worshiped became a symbol of evil in many parts of the world.
However in England and Ireland, black cats are symbols of good luck.
In the English Midlands, a black cat as a wedding present
is for to bring good luck to the bride.
And a Scottish believes a strange black cat’s arrival to the home signifies prosperity.
Black cats are also considered as good luck in Japan.
But most of western and southern Europe still consider the black cat as a symbol of bad luck,
especially if one crosses your path
which is believed to an omen of misfortune and death.
So what’s the truth about black cats?
The truth is these are superstitions from centuries ago.
但悲哀的是 与其他毛色或花纹的猫相比 黑猫躲避的时间更长
Sadly black cats remain in shelters longer than cats with colour or pattern codes
and are often the last to be adopted and the first to be euthanized.
There are still people that believe these dumb superstitions.
But the real truth is that cats, no matter what the colour their fur is,
all have different personalities and none of them bring bad luck.
但相较而言 猫是有好看和不好看的 仅个人观点
If anything, only the cat is good-looking, in my opinion.
And my personal experience with black cats has always been positive.
So if you can get passed the silly superstitions
and are looking to be owned by a cat,
please consider adopting a lucky black cat.
Thanks for watching.
