When Tigers Meet Humans | BBC Earth

Vagany is ready to mate again.
Vagany
she spent all morning calling for Rejore
Rejore
But so far there’s no reply.
When he doesn’t appear for three days,
we all join for search.
Picking up his trail,
following his footprints
We are all worried.
And then we find him,
dead.
Not killed by poachers
but poisoned by a villager, protecting his cattle.
But Vagany doesn’t know her mate is dead.
She’s still searching for him.
She can smell him. But he’s gone.
Before the journey can begin,
Giles wants to show Kerry the worst reality of tiger persecution.
They’ve come to the headquarters of the national park.
As well as dozens of confiscated snares,
there are several tiger skins, the poachers’ victims.
Seeing the skins of young tigers is particularly difficult for Kerry.
They weren’t even the oldest. Spot and stripe.
It’s probably they just started to explore his own surroundings, you know.
Hard to comprehend them.
No matter how many times she said, never gets easier.
On the international market,
a single wild tiger can fetch over 30,000 pounds.
The trade is a complex problem.
The poachers are the evil that the ones doing it.
But these guys are only doing it because it’s a way of living
And it’s the people behind them
that are fueling it and then the people who are buying it
that’s creating the demand.
Okay. It’s right underneath the snow right here. See it.
Saw there, the little cub.
Coming out. It’s coming out.
Out here, sticks are the only way to capture the cub without hurting it.
We got the last cub. It’s so good to see him alive.
They just mobilize him now.
I can’t believe he’s seen him through the storm.
And I’m this close to a crawling cub.
It’s moving a bit. It’s moving.
The cub is given a calming saditive.
Just waiting for the drug to take effect. Okay.
It can take up to 10 minutes, when this many people around.
It’s more stressed. It’s harder for the drug to take effect.
I still can’t quite believe we’ve got him.
You know, every one of these cubs is so important,
and there are only 400 in the wild.
We really thought he’d died, this one,
and then how he’s lasted for about ten days on his own,
without mother, without his brother and sister.
And now, hopefully can join them at the rehap center,
and one day come back into the wild.
This is great. This is what we wanted, get this guy.
He’s got a second chance now.
which is all we can do is to give him a second chance.
The next morning, and the cubs are doing well.
Here we go. Your two little boys.
They’re healthy, 1.2 kilograms each.
And as the days roll by, the cubs continue to thrive.
and Giles is watchful eye.
So we are trying to spend a little bit of time with them every day.
It’s really important,
because ultimately from day one, we’ve been building up bond with them.
till the fact when they just get used to it.
You know, hearing my voice and sensation of being touched, and picked up and stuff. It’s really good.
His eyes are still completely closed, and this is day 8.
– Yeah, it’s usually between 6 and 12. – Yeah
Are you gonna stay? Stay still for just a second.
– Wow, they are growing. – See they’re growing quickly.

– That’s 200 grams again in a day. It’s fantastic. – Wow.
So they are only 12 days old,
and they are all already doubled their birth weight.
The stronger and bigger you get, the quicker you get,
the better your chance of survival in the wild.
Just noticed that one little eye is open.
She’s awesome.
You can see me now, sort of.
You can see a shadow anyway.
For the first couple of weeks, they are not going to be able to focus properly to see.
It’s still gonna take, like a human baby, like it takes a few weeks to, for the eyes to adjust.
Two weeks later, the cubs are growing stronger.
And it’s time for Gilles to give them names.
Gilles
So if you look at the two of them together,
this is little chap has more of continuous stripe going along this way.
whereas this one is a bit more broken, looks like a spot.
So this is, we’re calling this one Spot for the time being, and this one Stripe.
Stripe
And he tends to have a little bit more of a feisty character than his brother.
He’s going to be a challenge. I can see it already.
See what I mean by being stroppy?
Aren’t you. Yeah.
That’s good. You got spirit.
So this is one we’re calling Spot.
这只是Spot
This little chap was the first one born,
and he was the one that for the first couple of hours we were little worried about.
He had a bit of a tougher time, didn’t you?
You are doing well. He’s nearly the same weight as his brother now.
Despite their good health, life for young tigers is precarious.
Globally, over a third of captive born Sumatran cubs won’t make it to adulthood.
So you need to relax on your brother.
So Giles has made a difficult decision to safeguard the cubs’ future.
– You’re gonna pass with flying colours, buddy. – Yep.
He’s going to hand raise them himself at home,
so he can give them 24 hour care.
And Mel the vet has come to check if they are healthy enough to leave.
The hearts sound really good.
– Steady beat, no murmurs – Look how relaxed he is.
He’s so relaxed.
– We are starting off with such robust healthy little cubs. – Yeah.
They are not too young. They already got so much strength.
The cubs will be vulnerable to illness untill they are around 6 weeks old.
So Giles has got to keep an close eye on them around the clock.
There is an awful lot of pressure,
you know, this first and foremost, you know, this pressure,
because there guys are so important to not only us here at the zoo,
but also to the brilliant program,
potentially a lot of eyes around the world that are, you know,
watching what we are doing,
and making sure we’ll do a good job.
The cubs are now using anything and anyone to try out their new teeth.
So Giles has a plan.
This morning we’re gonna see if they will use these carnassial teeth that they just got.
Carnassial teeth are specialist molars
that are allowed carnivorous to slice meet efficiently.
The fact that they’ve got those big chewing teeth at the back,
the ones that slice the meat.
This is a good indication to me that they are probably at the point
where they can start to chew their own food.
So if these guys are in the wild,
mum would definitely be taking them to where she’s made the kill,
and probably giving it a go themselves.
It’s a really really big step,
because if they take well to this this morning,
you know, we can move on to other stuff.
This new face often triggers the development of another specific tiger behaviour.
They might get a little bit possessive if they really get into it, if they really like it.
You might just see a little bit of swiping and snarling
And being more food focused than his brother,
Spot
Giles wants first born Spot to give it a go.
You are just the one I wanted.
Hmm, what’s this?
What is it? Are you ready?
Now excuse me, this is my hand.
He got possessive straight away.
But he’s using his teeth. He’s got the idea.
To the side. There we go.
If I just let it go, he’d keep swallowing it,
until the fact that I pull it to the side, make him uses carnassial teeth
which are the ones that are designed for chewing off chunks of flash.
Deary me! Just, I’ll leave him alone for a second.
Turning into a tiger.
No, ah ah ah.
不行
Good boy!
And it’s not long till Stripe has his turn.
This is Stripe, and Stripe normally isn’t as driven for his food as what Spot is anyway.
And he’s doing a good job.
It was the other way around with Spot eating the piece of meat.
He wouldn’t tolerate Stripe jumping all over him like this.
He’d be all possessive.
So Spot is more driven for the food.
Stripes gives another go.
Easy.
Being possessive is completely natural.
If they’ve made a kill in the wild, then they’re gonna do what they can do to keep it.
They’ve spent a lot of energy making that kill.
And if they don’t eat, then they don’t survive.
So it’s worth investing the energy in being po…
right, on the inside thigh.
It’s worth the energy investing trying to protect it.
Spot is the more affectional one, Stripe is the naughtier one.
But when it comes to food, you can see, this little guy is, definitely much more driven.
Therefore, it makes him a little bit more possessive.
With the cubs getting stronger and feistier,
their days being able to live with Giles as his family are numbered.
