We Found the Largest Void in the Universe, And We're Smack in the Middle

Our galaxy is in the middle of NOWHERE.

The universe seems chaotic, but it’s actually not as bad as you think…

There is quite a bit of order.

20-percent of our universe is made of filaments… like these.
剩下的80%是空洞 大部分空洞都是真空
The other 80-percent of it are voids of mostly empty space.
超星系团 银河系 行星 银河系尘埃……
Superclusters, galaxies, planets, galactic dust…
所有的一切要么密集包裹成丝状结构
Everything is either densely-packed into a filament
要么待在孤独的空洞里
or in a lonely void.
一些研究人员认为
And some researchers are saying
我们的银河系可能恰好就处在
our Milky Way galaxy might exist smack-dab in the middle
某个最大的宇宙空洞中
of one of the largest voids of them all.
我们可能生活在宇宙荒野中
We could be living in the middle of NOWHETE!
这对银河系来说可不寻常
Which is unusual for a galaxy!
就像我们生活在宇宙的郊区
It’s like we’re living in the universal boonies
而其他绝大多数银河系在城市里
and most other galaxies are in cities.
我们很孤单
We’re so alone…
这听起来很吓人
As scary as this may sound,
但研究人员似乎认为这没什么大不了
the researchers seem to think it’s not that big of a deal.

It sounds like because we’re further away from the filaments,

our night sky is a bit darker,

but other than that, not much else is different.

There is something big that could come from this study though

if it’s proven.

Our universe is massive and it’s constantly expanding.

Just the observable cosmos reaches about 46 billion light-years!
但是天文学家努力了数十年
But astronomers have been struggling for decades
来解决宇宙膨胀的真正速率
to figure out the exact rate of universal expansion
就是著名的哈勃常数
— also known as the Hubble Constant.
有两个方法来测哈勃常数
There are two methods to measure this —
通过测量临近星系退行地球的速率
to look at nearby bright stars that are moving away from us,
或者观察宇宙大爆炸产生的微波背景辐射
or to look at the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (left over from the Big Bang)
研究它移动的速率
and see how fast that is moving.
实际上这有很大的争议
It’s actually a big debate,
因为这两个方法得到的常数不一样
because these two methods don’t give you the same Constant.

This new research suggests that

because we’re in a void,

gravity is pulling us closer to the filaments

and that movement could be messing up calculations with the nearby stars.

So to put it all together —

the CMB method of analyzing the expansion of the universe
