– Do you ever get confused about when
什么时候用 for 感到困惑吗
to use to and when to use for?
Well this video should help you understand
how and when to use them.
I’ll start off by goingthrough three cases
where both for and to can be used
in different ways.
I’ll then talk you through six situations
where you can use to and six situations where you can use for.
And hopefully you’llfinish the video knowing
much more about to and for and feeling much more confident when speaking.
Now I will tell youthat here I am referring
to to and for as prepositions
but in some of these cases,
they are not considered prepositions but for simplicity we’re going
to treat them as if they were.
I don’t want to get toogrammatical with you
because I honestly don’t think it would add anything to this lesson.
I just want you to learnand understand English. Ah,
important, remember to connect with me
on all my social media.
Obviously subscribe to me here, on my YouTube channel.
You can also like my page on Facebook,
I post regularly.
I also have my Instagram page,
which I recently started and also to my Chinese followers,
I have Webo.
So all of the information is just here.
So many of you would know that I am an English teacher,
here in London.
And the vast majority ofmy students are Spanish.
And a phrase that I hear rather a lot,
rather too much actually is
I moved to London for to learn English（我来到伦敦是为了去学英语）
“I moved to London for to learn English”.
首先我想告诉大家的是 Lon don
Now I want to help you guys here and the first point is Lon don,
I leave in London, London.
Lon don doesn’t exist.
lon don 不是我所想的那个城市
Lon don is not a placeas far as I’m concerned.
第二个他们的错误是 for to learn
So they next point is for to learn.
I hear many, many students use for with the infinitive
and this is wrong.
This is something youhave to completely delete
from your brain.
Forget it, never use it again because it doesn’t exist in English.
So in this video I’m going to teach you
when and how to use for
and when and how to use to. Okay,
so when we are expressing reason,
we can use both for and to.
So lets talk about going to supermarket.
I went to the supermarket to buy apples.
I went to the supermarket for apples.
So the biggest difference here is that
in the first example,to refers to the action.
We’re using a verb.
In the second example for refers
to the noun, apples.
For apples or to buy apples, okay?
So both can be used.
So now I’ve got a question for you.
i moved to London beep learn English
I moved to London beep learn English.
Would it be for or would it be to?
Well learn is a verb.
So it would of course be to. Okay,
now on to the next one
which is ever so slightly more complicated.
And this is all aboutindicating a recipient.
A recipient is someonewho receives something.
I made a cake for Felicity.
I gave the cake to Felicity.
Felicity sold it to Ellie.
Felicity and Ellie are my best friends, by the way.
I hope they don’t mind being used in my lesson.
With made we use for but with gave and sold we use to.
And that’s because theseverbs show movement
or a transfer of something from one place
to another or one person to another.
So I gave the cake to Felicity.
I passed it from me to her
but originally I made it for her.
I created it for her, there’s no movement
in this verb.
Okay now onto expressing intention
and this is another situation in which both for and to can be used.
but in different ways.
I asked her to give me the keys.
I asked her for the keys.
Much like the first onefor goes with the noun
for 接名词 to 接动词
and to goes with the verb.
It’s really quite simple.
I asked someone to do something
or I asked someone for something.
Okay so here I’ve gotsome general situations
我们要使用 to 而不能用 for
where we use to and not for.
Now these aren’t fixed rules.
We don’t have many fixed rules
in English but this should help you to be able to communicate more efficiently.
So the first one, one that we’ve already discussed,
motive or reason with a verb.
I came here to talk to you.
Talk 是动词 所以我们用 to
Talk is the verb so we use to.
Then we have telling the time.
Lets meet at ten to nine.
Ten ta nine 当我这么说的时候
Ten ta nine, when I say it,
我读作ta ten ta nine
I say ta, ten ta nine.
It is about 10 kilometres from my house to yours.
It’s about 10 kilometres from my house to your house.
I prefer apples to oranges.
比(to 但被读作ta)起橘子 我更爱苹果
I prefer apples ta oranges.
你会注意到 我说了 ta 而不是 to
You will notice that I’m saying ta not to.
This is another mistake that non natives tend to make.
We are going to France.
We are going ta France.
And the one we looked at before, transferring,
to give给 to send送 to sell买
so to give, to send, to sell
among many other options.
I sent it to her yesterday.
I sent it to her yesterday.
是Ta her yesterday 好的
Ta her yesterday. Okay,
now I have six situations
where you should use for.
Again not strict rules, just indications that will help you,
improve your communication in English.
So the first one is ifsomething is beneficial
This means if something is good for you or bad for you.
Drinking water is good for you. Okay,
drinking too muchwine is bad for you.
And then we have periods of time.
I lived in Spain for a couple of years.
Then we have schedules and arrangements.
I’ve made an appoint forthe the fourth of May.
Now this is important.
尽管我写了 forth May
Although I wrote forth May,
应该是 the fourth of May
I say the fourth of May
No one says”I’ve made an appointment
使用“for fourth May”
for fourth May”.
是 the fourth of May
The fourth of May.
美国人会说 May fourth
Americans would say May fourth
但在英国 我们会说the fourth of May
but in Britain, we say the fourth of May. Right,
motive or reason with a noun.
This we’ve discussed at the beginning of the video.
I went to the shop for milk.
Then we have doingsomething to help someone. So,
can I carry that for you?
Then I have function with an i-n-g verb.
So a spoon is used for eating
or wine is made for drinking.
You know me.
Thank you for watching this video.
I hope its helped youunderstand a little more
能帮助你更好地使用 to 和 for
about how to use to and for.
Make sure you connect with me on all my social media.
I love communicating with all of you.
And check back soon for another video.
