The Science of Laziness

It can feel good lounging around and doing nothing…
无所事事地消磨时间感觉真好
sometimes too good!
有时候有些太好了!
Whether it’s to avoid work or escape physical activity,
无论是想逃离工作还是不想运动
we’ve all had those days.
这样的日子我们都有过
But why are some people way lazier than others?
但为什么有些人比别人懒散得多?
Is there a’couch-potato gene’ that causes lazy behaviour?
懒人是不是有“懒惰基因”?
Evolution has molded our brains and bodies
人脑和身体经过进化塑造
to respond positively to natural rewards
会对自然奖赏做出正面反馈
such as food, sex and even exercise.
如食物 性欲 甚至是运动
Wait – exercise??
等等 运动?
Yup, the pleasure we experience comes largely
对 我们感受到的愉悦大部分
from the dopamine system in our brain,
来自大脑中的多巴胺系统
which conveys these messages throughout the body,
多巴胺将这些信号传递到身体各处
ultimately helping to ensure the survival of our species.
最终对确保物种生存起到促进作用
For many, the pleasure derived from exercise
对很多人来说 运动带来的愉悦
can become just as addictive as food and sex.
和食物 性欲一样令人着迷
But while we’re all up for more food and sex,
然而虽然我们追求美食和性
many struggle with the desire for physical activity
很多人却不喜欢运动
even though it’s an essential part of human biology.
即使运动是人体生物中十分重要的一部分
Scientists studying mice have found an interesting genetic connection.
科学家用老鼠做实验 发现了有趣的基因关系
After separating mice into two groups –
他们把老鼠分成两组
those that chose to run on their wheel more often
一组喜欢跑轮
and those that decided not to run as much –
另一组跑轮少
the difference was clear in their offspring.
两组老鼠的后代呈现出明显差异
After 10 generations,
十代过后
the running mice would run on their wheels
跑轮多的老鼠后代
75 % more often than the other group,
跑轮频率比另一组高了75%
and by 16 generations they were running 7 miles a day
十六代后 跑轮多的后代平均每天跑7英里
as opposed to the average 4 miles.
而另一组平均每天只跑4英里
It seemed their motivation for physical activity was genetic.
看起来 运动的积极性似乎与基因有关
We all inherit genes from our parents
我们遗传自父母的基因
that play a key role in the development of our brains,
对大脑发展起到重要作用
and these genes can make some literally crave activity.
而这些基因可能会令一些人热爱运动
In fact, the brains of the running mice had larger dopamine systems
实际上 跑轮多的老鼠大脑中涉及动机和奖励的
and regions that deal with motivation and reward.
多巴胺系统及区域更大
They needed activity,
它们需要运动
otherwise their brains would react similar to
不然它们的大脑会产生类似
a drug-addicted rodent when deprived of cocaine or nicotine.

They were genetically addicted to running.

We also inherit genes responsible for our other traits –
其它一些特征也来自遗传基因
from impulsivity to procrastination,

to work ethic and straight up laziness.

And it turns out our physical laziness may be

linked to a couch potato gene –
“懒惰基因”有关
or rather, a mutation in a normal gene which regulates activity levels.
或者说 控制运动的基因发生了突变
This gene is responsible for a type of dopamine receptor –
这个基因负责一种多巴胺接收器
without it, you’re more likely to prefer sitting around,
接收器缺失的话 比起基因功能正常的人
and simply doing less than those who have the properly functioning gene.
你可能更喜欢闲坐着不做事
So the truth is,
因此事实上
your desire for activity may not be entirely up to you.
你想不想运动并不完全取决于你
But many environmental factors are also at play,
许多环境因素也在起作用
which means you aren’t doomed to a life of laziness.
所以你并不是注定懒惰一辈子
Although making a change will be harder for some,
虽然有些人会更难做出改变
knowledge is power.
但知识就是力量
So if you think you are genetically lazy,
如果你觉得你的懒惰是天生的
get off the couch and fight your DNA.
离开沙发 与你的DNA做斗争吧
Your brain will reward you in the end.
你的大脑最终会给你回报
