The Power of Positive Thinking

很多年前
Many years ago,

Dr. Norman Vincent Peale who was a colleague of mine,

but he was still alive,

wrote a book called The Power of Positive Thinking.

It’s still one of the most popular books on personal success

and personal development ever written.

And his basic message was,
如果以积极的方式进行思考
is if you think in a positive way,
就会得到积极的结果
you’ll have positive results,
就会在很多时候感到快乐
and you’ll be happy most of the time.

So how do you use the power of positive thinking?
研究人员在宾夕法尼亚大学做了一项研究
Well, they did a study at the University of Pennsylvania,
美国的一些大公司对此进行了资助
it was funded by some of the biggest companies in America.
在22年间
And over a 22-year period,
他们采访了超过35万的像你我这样的人
they interviewed more than 350,000 people like you and I,
询问了许多关于他们的生活和态度
and asked them a lot of questions about their lives
以及其它种种的问题
and their attitudes and so on.
其中一个问题就是:
And one of the questions they asked them is:
多数时间你都在想什么?
what do you think about most of the time?
研究人员实施了一系列实验
Then they conducted a series of experiments,
实验对象为正在攻克
It is they would have graduate students
心理学或社会学论文的研究生
who are working on their papers in psychology or sociology,
在每周的任意时间给他们打电话
phone these people once a week at random during the week.
只问:你现在在想什么?
And just say: what are you thinking about right now?
并记录下来
And they write it down,
他们在下周的不同日期的不同时段打电话
And the next week they call them on a different day at a different time.
且预设了被试期望的打进电话的时段
This is all pre-arranged that they would be expecting the call sometime.

And what are you thinking about right now?
写下来
Then write it down.
接着他们开始按十分位数表达法筛选组群
Then they began to sort these groups out in terms of the deciles,
即10% 末尾组占10% 承接组10%
which is ten percents, the bottom 10%, the next 10%,
顶尖组占10%
all the way up to the top 10%.
他们注意到处于顶尖组的10%的人
And they notice that people in the top 10%
所思所想与余下80%的人截然不同
thought very differently from people in the bottom 80%.
顶尖组的人们多数时间都会想什么?
What do top people think about most of the time?
猜得到吗?
Can you guess?
答案很简单 很不可思议
The answer was so simple, it was amazing:
他们会在多数时间想
they think about what they want
自己想要什么和如何得到它
and how to get it most of the time.
他们想的是想要的东西和得到的方式
They think about what they want and how to get it,
考虑的是目标
they think about their goals,
想的是优先考虑的事
and they think about their priorities,
以及自己每天的行为和活动
and they think about their actions and activities each day.
他们想的是需要拜访的人数
They think about the number of people they need to call on,
以及需要汇总的建议数量
and the number of proposals they need to put together.
需要阅读和研究的事物数量
and the number of things they need to read and just study.
他们总是在想自己想要什么
They’re always thinking about what they want.
当考虑想要的东西的时候你会很快乐
And when you think about what you want it makes you happy,
会让你变得积极
it makes you positive,
让你感觉自己掌控着整个人生
makes you feel in control of your whole life.
接着他们会考虑如何获得它
And then they think about how to get it.

So in my seminars I’ll say that

the most important word for leadership and success

is the word: how?
每当你有目标时
Whenever you have a goal,
考虑的唯一问题是如何才能实现它
the only question you has is how can I achieve this goal?
如果面对的是难题 如何才能解决它?
If ever you have a problem, how can I solve this problem?
如果面对一个障碍 该如何克服它?
If you have an obstacle, how can I overcome the obstacle?
优秀的人常会在多数时间考虑
Top people often think about what they want,
自己需要什么和获取的途径
and how to get it, most of the time.
结果是
And as a result,
他们考虑的是目标
they’re thinking about their goal
想的是自己可以在每一天中的
and they’re thinking about the actions that they could take
每一秒为快速实现目标所采取的行动
every single minute of every day to move faster toward achieving that goal.
厄尔·南丁格尔曾说过
Earl Nightingale once said that
幸福是一步一步循序渐进实现的
happiness is the progressive step-by-step realization
有价值的理想或目标
of a worthy ideal or goal.
当你感觉自己每天每小时都在稳步向
When you feel yourself moving step by step, each hour, each day
实现对自己而言很重要的事物迈近时
toward achieving something that’re important to you,
你会在很多时候感到积极与快乐
you’ll feel positive and happy most of the time.
顺便说一下 你知道非成功人士
By the way, do you know what unsuccessful people
多数时候会想什么?
think about most of the time?
他们想的是自己不想做的事
They think about what they don’t want,
让自己感到生气或沮丧的事
the things that make them angry or sad
通常是他们无法改变的往事
usually past events that they can’t change.
他们想的是因自己的难题而该责备的人
And they think about who’s to blame for all their problems.
因此每当你看到有人在讨论和抱怨
So, whenever you see people talking and complaining
自己无法改变的事儿时
about things that they can’t change,
说明这就是他们该在生活中承担的责任
things in their life are their responsibility,
是因自己的难题而责备别人的缘由
and then blaming others for their problems.
你知道自己面对的是一个消极悲观的人
You know you’re dealing with a negative unhappy person
前途十分狭隘 现实十分悲观
with a very limited future and a very unhappy present.
因此你掌控自己的思想的方式
So the way you take control of your mind
就像抓住车轮一般
like grabbing the wheel of a vehicle,
你开始一天到晚的考虑
you start to think about what you want
需要的东西和获取的方式
and how to get it all day long.
你在无意识间变得积极
And you automatically become positive
感觉自己已开始完全掌控人生
and start to feel a complete control of your life.
