you’ll find the world’sonly stilt fishermen.
Perched atop a handmadestilt driven into the sand,

我叫Anura Awis Wijewikrama
I catch fish using the stilt fishing method
(acoustic guitar music)
– [Narrator] The history of stilt fishingis said to go back to World War II,
when food shortages anda lack of proper boats
caused fishermen to getcreative for their catch.
Fishing from a stick offshore
helped them catch more fish.
I do fishing for two hours in the morning and about two hours in the evening
There is a specific fishing spot where we fish during all seasons.
The pole we embedded to catch fish will last about four months.
Once it has eroded，we remove it and replace it with a new one.
In the high season, I catch about 4 to 5 kilos[8 to 11 pounds] of fish
– [Narrator] Fishing isn’tas lucrative as it once was,
so most stilt fishermen haveother jobs to pay the bills
but continue to stilt fishto keep the tradition alive.
This fishing method has been passed down to generations
I learned it from my father. He learned from my grandfather
I don’t do this job for money.
I keep doing it to continue the tradition
because otherwise stilt fishing will go extinct
