– Football is the most popular sport in Sierra Leone.
And in the city of Freetown, there is one very special team.
Meet the Flying Stars.
My name is Mohamed Lappia.
I play for the Sierra Leone Flying Stars Amutee Football Club
and I play the attacking role.
Mohamed grew up playing football.
But when he was only 10 years old he stepped on a landmine
and had to have his right leg amputated.
And unfortunately, Mohamed isn’t alone.
The Sierra Leone Flying Stars AmputeeFootball Team is full of war-affected people.
Every member of the Flying Stars has lost limbs
as a result of the violence that occurred during the Civil War in Sierra Leone.
But the players don’t let their injuries stop them from getting into the game.
when we are playing, it is really rough and the crutches hit.
We are really rough.
The amputees play with one foot, one leg.
My name is Battley.
and I am the coach of the Flying Stars Amputee Football Club.
Presently in Freetown, there are 30 players on the team.
We train full time.
We train throughout the week.
When we come for training, we have some cones we put out, do some dribbling, short sprinting,
short kick, long kick, penalty shootout, just like the able-bodied people do.
Not only is it a competitive sport,
it is helping them cope with their injuries
and overcome the stigma that’s associated with the disabled.
Here in this country, we find that the discrimination is too much,
so we need to do things that will make us forget some of our problems.
And what better way than football.
Football , especially amputee football, has changed my life.
It has taken me off the street being a beggar and given me and players lots of courage.
