The Guardian Angel for Separated Families | Freethink

This woman is the legal guardian of over 1500 kids.
It’s estimated that
据估计
there are 4.1 million American children with undocumented parents,
currently living in the United States.
And if these parents get deported, they face a difficult choice:
take their kids back to the country they fled,
or, leave them alone in the US.
So that’s why Nora Sandigo steps in.
An immigrant herself,
she offers to be the legal guardian of any child who asks.
And this is her story.

Good afternoon. You’re back! How did it go?
Nora Sandigo Nora Sandigo

In 2009, two children showed up at Nora’s doorstep.
They were her neighbor’s kids.
They’d come home to discover that their father had been deported,
and they didn’t know what to do.
Nora decided to take them in, and raised them as her own.
Nora
-So that was the beginning.
-That was the beginning, and from that moment,
many, many kids came to my life.
The more Nora learned about the system, the more she felt compelled to help.
Nora
The immigration system, in general, is broken.
She learned that most undocumented parents
don’t have a plan for their kids
in the event of sudden deportation.
And that many are too fearful to ask authorities for guidance
because of their status.
And the kids are caught in the middle.
A family just arrived.
We still don’t know much about their story,
but it looks like the mother is about to be deported.
Nora regularly meets with undocumented parents,
Nora
like this woman, who expects to be deported at any moment.

translator: Does it give you some comfort like knowing that your daughter is protected?
-Yes. Yes. I feel a bit better knowing that she’ll have the child.
The need is so great in Miami, where Nora lives,
Nora
that she’s always on call.
-We’re on our way. We’ll be there in a few minutes.

She also provides basic education.
So families know what to expect they get deported,
and can make a plan.
-We also teach you what to do,
when the government deports a family member or you as well.
-So they don’t take their children away. So they don’t take them to foster care.
Because they are given into adoption.
Nora is often on the phone giving advice to teenagers
Nora
or counseling people with immigration issues.
-Yes, Yes. It’s best if he does it alone because if he has a good case.
It isn’t necessary for him to go with a lawyer.
Good luck. God willing, it will be approved. All right. Goodbye.
– Would you ever turn a child away?
– No!
不会
Most of Nora’s 1500 children don’t live with her,

but you can serve, you can come and help the children.
It’s not easy, but I will always be there.
trying to do everything for everyone.
Despite what she’s seen in her years doing this work,
Nora is committed continuing her fight for these kids.
