商务英语第6集:解决方案都有哪些?

The Business of English - Episode 6: What are the options?

第六集:解决方案都有哪些?
现在我们来仔细考虑处理线上订单的可选方案
Now we’re looking at the options for handlingour on-line orders.
线上订单正在飞涨
They’re going through the roof
说白了就是交货间隔期越来越紧了
and frankly the lead-time for deliveryis blowing out.
我们需要提高这方面的执行效率
We need to improve our performance in this area.
有什么建议吗?
Any suggestions?
依我看 我们有三个备选方案
Well, as I see it, we have three options.
显而易见的是雇更多人来做这份工作
The obvious one is to employ more people to do the job.
第二个方案是提高系统自动化
Another alternative is to automate the system more –
缩减人工处理环节
cut down on the physical handling.
那第三个方案呢?
And the third option?
我们可以外包
We could outsource.
这些方案都有什么利弊呢?
What are the pros and cons?
在比较增加人力和自动化这两个方案时
Well, looking at increasing staff versus automation,
我们必须考虑到成本
we have to consider the cost.
相比雇佣更多员工 自动化的资本消耗更高
Automating has a higher capital cost than putting on more staff.
另一方面
On the other hand,
长期来看 雇更多的人会更昂贵
employing more people is more expensive over a long term.
如果订单不断增加
If we keep growing
长期下来 雇人花的钱更多
it’ll cost more in the long run.
那订单不断增加的概率有多大呢?
How likely is it that we’ll see continuedgrowth?
我认为这是必然的
I’d say it’s a certainty.
我敢说可能性很高
I’d say a high probability
商业上没有必然
Nothing’s certain in business.
那第三个方案呢?
So what about the third option?
外包吗?
Outsourcing?
外包确实转移了我们的难题
Well, it does take the problemoff our hands.
但我们也会失去和顾客的联系
But we lose contact with our customers.
关键问题是什么?
What about the bottom line?
短期来看 外包是最低廉 最容易的方案
Outsourcing is the cheapest option, and the easiest – in the short term.
但如果想要保持内部运营
But if we want to keep the operation in-house
最好的选择是自动化我们的系统
the best option is automating our system.
唯一的缺点是
The only down side is,
我们得保证我们的业务能够持续增长
we’re taking a risk that our businesswill keep growing.
当然我们都希望如此
Which we hope it will.
我们当然可以
We certainly do.
我们之前已经了解过正式会议(是什么样子)
We’ve looked before at formal meetings.
今天的会议稍稍不那么正式
Today’s meeting is a more informal one
它主要讨论具体事宜
to discuss a specific issue.
这种讨论自由性更高
The discussion is more free-flowing,
或者说可控性更小
or uncontrolled.
我们先看看 Denise提出问题时
Let’s look first at some of the language used by Denise
所使用的一些商业用语
when she introduces the problem.
Denise说 “We’re looking at the options.”
Denise says,”We’re looking at the options.”
“options”是一个问题的不同解决方案或方法
Options are different solutions, or answers,to a problem.
问题是什么呢?
What is the problem?
线上订单正在飞涨
On-line orders are going through the roof.
线上订单是指通过网络完成交易的订单
On-line orders are orders for goods received through the internet,
而线上订单 “going through the roof”
and if they’re going through the roof
意味着线上订单数量激增
they are increasing in number very rapidly.
交货间隔期是指
The lead-time for delivery is the amount of time
从接单到出货所需的时间
it takes from when the order is received to when it’s delivered,
“blowing out” 意味着这段间隔时间太长了
and if it’s blowing out – that time is becoming too long.
我们使用 “blowing out” 这个词来表示
We use the expression blowing out for something
问题发展到不容忽视的地步
which is becoming too great in a bad way
因此 这种情况下 提高我们的执行效率意味着
So to improve our performance means, in this case,
要缩短交货所需的时间
to shorten the time it takes to deliver goods.
我们来看看 Tan建议的方案吧
Let’s look at Tan’s suggested options.
Tan描述了三个方案
Tan describes three options.
首先 他用 “As I see it”
First he lets us know that this is his opinion
让我们知道这是他的看法
by saying,”As I see it.”
一起来和Tan一起练习一些让别人知道
Practise with Tan some different ways of letting someone know
你正在陈述的内容就是你的观点的其他表达吧
that what you’re stating is your opinion.
这三种方案分别是
The three options are:
雇佣更多员工 自动化 以及外包
employ more people, automate, and outsource.
外包意味着要利用一个外部公司
To outsource means to use an outside company.
当我们表述不同观点时
When presenting different options,
我们可以通过这样的方式对它们进行排序
we can order them by numbers, like this.
首先 我们可以雇佣更多的员工
Firstly, we could employ more people.
其次 我们可以采用自动化
Secondly, we could automate.
最后 我们可以进行外包
And thirdly we could outsource.
我们还可以使用短语
We can also use phrases,
比如 “一种方案是……”
such as ‘one option is to’
以及 “另一个方案是……”
and ‘another option is to’.
我们也可以使用连接词
We can also use linking words,
如 “or” 和 “alternatively”
such as ‘or’ and ‘alternatively’.
我们也可以将这些方法结合使用
or, we can use a combination of these methods.
现在 我们来回顾下用来讨论这些方案的表达吧
Now let’s look at the language used to discuss these options.
考虑两种方案即是在对它们进行比较
When considering two options, we are comparing them.
当Barbara谈论增加员工对比自动化时
Barbara talks about increasing staffversus automation.
她的意思是接下来要比较这两个方案
She is saying that she is going to compare these two things.
另一个她可以使用的短语是 “As against”
Another phrase she could use is ‘as against’.
和她一起练习下吧
Practise with her.
当我们比较两个事物时
When comparing two things,
我们使用形容词的比较级
we use comparative adjectives.
再听一遍Barbara说的话
Listen to Barbara again,
看你能否听到两个形容词的比较级
and see if you can hear the two comparative adjectives.
她说 相比雇佣更多员工 自动化的成本更高
She says automating has a higher capital cost than putting on more staff.
Higher是比较级形容词
Higher is a comparative adjective.
我们经常使用“than”来连接被比较的方案
We often use ‘than’ for the option that isbeing compared.
记住 对于超过两个音节的单词
Remember for words of longer than two syllables,
我们使用 “more” 做比较级
we use ‘more’ for the comparative.
雇佣更多员工的成本更高
Employing more people is more expensive.
因为Barbara已经提到第二个方案是自动化
Because Barbara has already said what the second option is, automating,
所以她不用说
she doesn’t need to say
雇佣更多的人比自动化花费更多
employing more people is more expensive than automating.
注意她使用了短语 “on the other hand”
Notice that she uses the phrase ‘on the other hand’.
这个短语通常用于引入反面论据
This is used to introduce another side to an argument.
和Barbara一起练习下
Practise this with Barbara.
一方面 自动化成本高昂
On the one hand automation is expensive.
另一方面 自动化更高效
On the other hand it’s more efficient.
另一种比较两种观点的方法是使用连词
Another way of comparing two ideas is to use linking words
比如 but although 和 however
such as but, although and however.
现在来听听 关于持续增长可能性的讨论
Now listen to the discussion about the likelihoodof continued growth.
Denise问持续发展的可能性
Denise asks how likely continued growth is.
关于形容可能性的词语
In looking at words to describe likelihood,
我们可以使用这些词
we can use these words:
所以我们可以说
So we can say:
我们也可以用这些词来修饰它们 比如
We can also qualify these with words suchas:
在另一种句子中
And in a different kind of sentence,
我们可以将它们作为名词使用
we can use them as nouns:
这是确定的事
It’s a certainty
这是可能发生的事
It’s a possibility
这事有可能性
There’s a probability.
这事有很高的可能性
There’s a high likelihood
但我们不说 “There’s an unlikelihood”
But we don’t say, “There’s an unlikelihood.”
我们说 “There’s no likelihood(这事没有可能性)”
We say, “There’s no likelihood.”
最后 来看看当我们比较两个以上的方案时
Finally, look at what happens
会发生什么呢
when we compare more than two options.
你听到用形容词最高级
Did you hear the superlative adjectives used
去比较两个以上的方案了吗
to compare more than two things?
再听一遍 一共有三处
Listen again. There are three.
以上是今天的全部要点
Well our bottom line is that that’s all we have time for today
希望我们下次准时相约 商务英语
so I hope it’s quite certain I’ll see you next time for The Business English.
