English with Lucy
I have got Joe and Lia!
– 大家好- 大家好
Joe: Hello!Lia: Hi!
I will really struggle not to laugh, because it’s just so funny.
But today we’ve got a collaboration video.
So we’ll have one on their channel as well.
Do you want to introduce your channel today.
We’re Joe and Lia.
Hi, and our channel is All Things British.
Yeah, it’s all about British culture.
We’ve got some accent tutorials, things like that anything British.
Yeah, so if you’re a fan of “British-ness”
– 有不对吗？- 不太对吧……
Lucy: Is that right? joe: That isn’t a thing.
So if you are a fan of All Things British,
then I’m sure you’ll like their channel.
Emmm, but today I was thinking
that we spend our whole time correcting your mistakes
when you’re learning English.
So I thought it’ll be quite funny to tell you about times
that we have made mistakes in our own language.
– 没错- 没错
Joe: Yeah!Lia: Yeah!
So we’ve each got a couple to tell you.
Emm, I might start on?
– 你已经开头了 所以开始吧- 没错 开始吧
Lia: You already kick it off. So yeah. Joe: Yeah, go!
So this is when I was quite young.
I was about four years old, maybe five.
I was in reception,
which is what we call the lowest level of school.
– 嗯- 差不多五岁吧
Joe: Yeah.Lia: Yeah, like age 5.
Age five, yeah. So I would be four or five.
And I had to go off school,
I had to go home.
Because I was ill with a disease called impetigo,
which is like creates scabs on your face.
It’s just a skin condition but it’s very contagious,
it can pass to the other children.
But when I went back, I told all of my teachers
that I had a very bad case of osteoporosis.
Which is, when your bones, like wither away.
– 天呐！- 就像老人一样
Lia: Oh,my gosh! Yes!Joe: Very old, like old people.
Very old people.
所以 我走进教室 告诉我的老师
So I went it, I went in and I told my teachers.
They were like “Are you OK, Lucy? You’ve been off for a while.
Osteoporosis, age 5.”
This is with this young 5-year-old.
So I remember they’ve been like really careful with me.
Nobody touch Lucy.
And then after school they went to my mom and like
“Oh no, you know that’s so sad to hear about Lucy’s condition.”
My mom was like
‘Yeah, it was a bit annoying, you know,
take some time of work.’
Got some cream.
Yeah, Oh my Gosh!
And then they were know like “you know, how do we deal with this in the classroom?”
She was like “Well, it’s gone now.”
They were like “It’s gone? Like it’s cured?”
She is healed.
Yeah, in the end, it turns out
I was always a fan of really long words as a child
and I had learned osteoporosis.
I think a neighbor had it or something. So yeah…
– 这个真的好搞笑- 确实
Lia: Wow, that’s really funny,Joe: Well, that’s good.
And until this day, you still misunderstand.
Yeah and it’s not even like a slight misunderstanding.
It’s like a fully different word and meaning.
I thought you’re gonna say impotence
when you say impetigo.
And I thought I thought you were gonna say that
you went back to school
and told everyone you were a tiger.
like I have been had impetigo
like I was a tiger.
– 我确实不知道- 这说的通
– I don’t know.- That make sense.
– 到你看到了吧 露西多聪明- 聪明的露西
Joe: But look, clever Lucy!Lia: Clever Lucy!
But I always like really long words as a child,
so I probably spent ages memorizing it. Osteoporosis, osteoporosis…
So I’ve got osteoporosis!
That’s amazing. I am gonna say mine.
So when you’re at train station,
sometimes they say like “stand back
there’s a freight train coming.”
Freight. And I always thought that was a frightful train,
like fright train like you should be scared of this train.
Oh my god! freight train.
I thought there’s a fright train, freight.
货车 是货车 但我在想
Yeah, freight, freight, freight. I’m just like
oh no, there is a fright train coming!
Get what I like…
and I didn’t know what a freight train was …
That’s a loads area.
– 你那阵多大？- 我仍然那样觉得
Joe: How old were you?Lia: I still do it.
Still do it.
– 这车太恐怖了！- 真的恐怖
Joe: It’s scary train!Lia: It’s scary train! Yeah.
It goes really quickly.
Yeah, what is a freight train?
– 是那种装有……很多货物的火车- 很重的货物
Lia: It’s like a train carrying…a heavy load. Lucy: A heavy load.
But I just thought it’s a train to be scared of.
like be scared of these frightful trains.
Lia: Freight train, fright train.
– 好好笑- 有趣
Lucy: That’s so funny. Joe: That is funny.
– 这是我的误解- 这很傻
Lia:That is my misunderstanding.Lucy: So dumb.
It’s really dumb.
It’s really really dumb.
所以 如果你能帮助智障的话 我就是
So hey good guys, if you help the dumb. I’m dumber.
If you may you feel better.
That is very dumb,
but I don’t want to say like because mine is also dumb.
Cuz still till today, I can’t understand it.
Joe, do you feel like we are at this like dumb confession meeting.
– 傻事分享会- 大家好 我叫乔 我很傻
Lucy: Stupidity nominates. Joe: Hi, my name Joe and I’m dumb.
Em, so I always get this word wrong.
I still, right now,
don’t really know what it means.
It’s the word dozen.
Like a dozen eggs.
How many? Is it six or is it twelve?
I can never remember.
So why don’t people would just say I’ve got twelve eggs?
They say I’ve got a dozen eggs.
It doesn’t make any sense.
– 就像“一点” 一点是多少？- 是啊 到底是多少
Lucy: Like a few. How many is a few? Joe: Yeah, how many is a few?
Oh god, so annoying.
When you say just “few” it means like very little.
但你说“a few” 意思是“有一些”
Because you say “a few” it means I’ve got some.
I’m sorry, I apologize for our awful language.
But if I go on to my second one
and then we can go on to yours.
Because my second one is very similar.
The word fortnight.
What does fortnight mean?
It’s two weeks, I think.
Two… Then why don’t people to say two weeks?
Oh, we’re going on holiday for a fortnight.
Cuz I thought fortnight meant 10 days.
And I still kind of think it means 10 days.
Oh, what would you say?
A fortnight, is it five to…?
Oh, you don’t know either!
不 这是两周的意思 是14天
No no, it’s two weeks. It’s 14.
But is it 15 days or is it 14 nights. It’s that word
I don’t know
– “fort”听起来像14- 我还是很困惑
Lia: Fort sounds like fourteen…Joe: I’m just confused.
Just these word doesn’t…a fortnight, I’m like…
Just use the actual numbers.
Use the numbers!
So I bet half a dozen throws you off center.
Yeah, what does that mean? Does that mean 3? or does that mean 6?
I have a way to remember it in Spanish.
在西语中 doce是十二的意思 就像dolphin
Doce. It is 12, so it’s like…
That is a good tip.
Joe’s gonna be lie in the sink like…
一打 海豚 哦对 是12个
Dozen, dolphin, ah yeah, 12!
So yesterday we were trying to find a booth.
Like a place to sit in this bar.
You were like let’s get a booth.
And I thought she said “booze” with a lisp.
So I was like “Yeah let’s get boozy!”
That is so good.
Oh my gosh!
Guys, let’s get some booze.
What’s your second one?
My second one…
So this one is really embarrassing…
I have actually put it on my Instagram,
so I wonder if you saw it,
but I was putting in like a dishwasher.
I just got the dishwasher fitted
and I was texting the plumber.
And I was like
“look, I just want to know if it can go in or not.”
So he said “send me a picture of the trap under the sink.”
And a trap is like a water pipe.
And I opened the sink carbinet and I saw a mouse trap.
And I was like “How does he know?”
That there is a trap under my sink.
Cuz I didn’t understand the word trap
No, why would you? You are not plumber.
So I was like that’s so weird.
And it was like this mouse trap
with the words “big cheese” on it.
So I just took the picture
and sent him a picture of the trap.
So I took a picture of this mouse trap
and sent off to him.
And he like to reply me.
He came back and he was like
” No, I mean the water pipe.”
And then I loads laughing faces.
I actually have this screen show
which I’ll put it on the screen.
It was so embarrassing.
Thant’s so good.
You have to text messages back and forth.
That’s so good.
I actually went
I was so suspicious
It was like “How did he know?”
Why do we need a trap?
I didn’t question it.
It was like “Yep, rodent free!”
Like now you can come up to my house and fix the dishwasher.
That’s so good.
Joe: Oh my gosh!Lia: That’s amazing!
Oh my gosh!
Okay so it’s I actually
we were talking about this a moment ago
I still can’t get left and right
without nothing to do with the words left and right.
When I was doing my driving test,
I had to write ‘L’ on that
let it just small and ‘R’ here.
And I had to ask the examiner to gesticulate
Lia: So it just…Lucy: You can’t do that.
That wouldn’t help me.
You can ask her you can say that I really
When you say left and right,
it just doesn’t do anything in my brain.
So can you just go turn left,
so I could see her hands and I was like thank you.
Yeah, that would have helped me,
cuz I really struggle with it as well.
Because they would saying you know just
whoever makes an ‘L’ that’s left
and I’d be like cool.
Yeah happens all the time with Lia
when we’re going and I’m like okay
We just turn right and she would be like
啊 啊 她要反应很久
“Uh uh I should just take some moment.”
I think that people must think I’m really dumb,
but on paper I am really smart.
But I just can’t get left and right.
Sounds like somebody dumb would say.
Yeah, On paper, I’m really clever.
Okay, the other one really quaintly is escalator and elevator.
I can’t tell you if we’re in an escalator.
We are in …on and I can’t get that.
Say the first word again.
I think you say that incorrectly.
How do you say?
– 我得做个关于“escalator”的视频- Es-ca-lator not ye-lator.
– Well, I have to make another video, escalator.
That’s a midlands thing.
That is a midlands thing.
Blame it on region.
Yeah I know they are very similar.
Can you imagine that being confusing for a learner.
Thank you. I’m not a learner.
I’m not a learner.
Yes, I was born here.
I’m sure there’s so many more,
but I just can’t bring myself to admit them to you guys.
Yeah, there are so much that are so stupid.
But that’s the thing you shouldn’t ever worry
if you’re making mistakes
when this is a second language.
Like when people
who from their first language like even we get stuff wrong.
We always get stuff wrong.
So yeah, I would say just use your mistakes as funny anecdotes
which is what we’ve done.
We know kind of them funny.
They amused us.
They’re just great anecdotes, yeah.
Thanks for having us on the channel.
It was so lovely.
I feel like I’m on This Morning.
Yeah, I know.
Yes, I feel like I’m suddenly like a…
oh my gosh!
That’s all for today’s video.
I hope you enjoyed it.
I don’t really think you’ve learned much.
But this is more of a conversation listening practice.
What we use for everything that isn’t strictly educational.
But really it was just to make you laugh
and feel a bit better about yourselves.
I know you lack confidence, so…
I hope this is a little bit of escapism for you.
Don’t forget to connect me
and Joe and Lia on our social media
which will be popping up on the screen right now.
And we hope to see you over on John and Lia’s channel.
Where with fun, we’ve got another video.
Yeah, We’re about to now.
And I’ll see you soon for another lesson.
Oh beautifully done!
