becomes the ultimate aim for most international students
and perfect endnote to their Australian experience.
But with 180,000 Australian students graduating each year
to land yourself a dream job isn’t easy.
This season we are going to take you inside the minds of some most sought-after employers and career conultants

to find out the secrects of successful job hunting.
In this episode,
这期
we are going to talk about how to get the most out of your internship.
What we’re looking for is people with potential,
so the ability to learn.
So we obviously look at academic transcripts,
but that’s not really the major, the major factor for us.
So you need to have good marks,
but you need also being able to show that you are interested in what’s happening in the world,
in the business world, but the world more generally,
um, and you’re doing things through your extracurricular activities or things outside your academic results
to show you’re really interested and curious, and you want to learn and grow.
I think you should be prepared with certain writing skills,
teaming with others, very important skills
and understand how to work in a team,
how to listen to your colleagues
before you go off and try to solve a problem
really listen and understand what problem are you solving,
and what would be the critical steps to be able to solve that problem.
You wanna be as ready as possible
to take full advantage of the experience from day one.
Many interns think they come to learn.
But the employers hope the interns
come to do cumbersome, complex and boring tasks for them in a short period of time.
Sometimes the interns would say to us,
“This job is too boring.
It’s purely a manual input.
Can you give us some real work?”
This shows where the gap is.
The employers hope the interns will come
to do the printing, serve the tea and water,
copying, scanning, do the odds and ends
or some other cumbersome work.
These things always need to be done.
So honestly, usually they are
assigned to interns to handle,
since they don’t need much job-training.
My recommendation to students is
is to get the most out of the experience
by being avaliable to take on the tasks that are given to them.
Some students feel they might not be confident to take things on,
always take something on, ask questions if you need to,
but take advantage of all your opportunities that are given to you.
You need to adjust your attitude as a learner.
You must ask yourself besides learning for yourself,
“what can I bring to the company?”
The most important thing for a company that provides internships
is what service or value an intern can bring to them.
So we must show to them some of our best attributes.
What did you do today?
Did you find that challenging?
What kind of skills do you think you develop from that experience?
Did you seek feedback in relation to how well you had discharge that activity?
And also with in the organization
you’ve got a fantastic opportunity to really explore the workplace culture by asking questions of people who work within that organization,
and to ask them about the roles they have,
but also how did they get to this point in their career.
What did they study,
what did they do in terms of experiences while they’re at university,
how did they combine their first job, their next job.
So to really understand what a career journey might look like within an organization,
so you’re really developing some keen insights.
In fact, the job you did in your intership
could be the one you’ll look after graduation.
It’s much easier to seek employment from your intership provider
than go to a new employer.
That’s all for this episode.
