Studying in Australia - How to impress employers with your resume

as one of the most popular destinations
for young people hoping to get a top-class education
Australia now attracts tens of thousands of international students each year,
to universities across the country.
After spending so much precious time and money on university education down under,
finding a dream job after graduation becomes the ultimate aim for most international students
and a perfect endnote to their Australian experience.
But with one hundred and eighty thousand Australian students graduating each year,
to land yourself a dream job isn’t easy.
This season, we’re going to take you inside the minds of some most sought-after employers,
and career consultants to find out the secrets
of successful job hunting.
In this episode, we’ll find out how to prepare your resume
to make it stand out from the rest.
The average time a top 500 company spends
reading a resume is between 6-8 seconds.
How can you make your resume stand out
in 6-8 seconds?
First, it should be simple and clear.
So you should do subtraction
on your resume, not addition.
I don’t think a resume should be too long.
I’d suggest to keep it around two pages,
three pages at most.
For me, the most important thing is actually understanding something about the company
that you are looking to apply to.
Um… All the things you have done in your life,
or particularly last few years of your life around outside university…
They are the really important things.
So make sure you get those things into the CV.
Um… And make sure the CV is accurate.
No spelling mistakes!
Proper grammar!
Well, I think employers are looking for specifics of the skills
that somebody has
and demonstration of those skills.
So it’s not always useful simply to write
where somebody worked,
without elaborating on what kinds of projects or work activities did somebody do.
If young people might have an experience in community service,
not where did you work and what did you do
but the specifics of what you’ve accomplished in that assignment.
So people who are focusing in on
um…CV or resume can get as much
texture about what this person’s skills , experiences
and what responsibilities they had from reading that.
If it’s simple, it’s not good enough.
It’s got to be more detailed.
Generally speaking,
employers want to see
a nicely laid-out resume,
not something text-heavy.
Writing a resume is a “comparison process”.
We see a lot of cultural differences.
preparing resumes in China.
After coming to Australia,
I found the resumes we wrote in China
were too meticulous, too detailed.
Australian employers want you to focus
on the key points.
After coming to Australia
I was told by a professor
to read more on Linkedln,
where many Australian professionals
put up their resume for potential jobs.
By reading more of their resumes,
you’ll find the template
that suits you and write accordingly.
This can help increase your opportunities
for finding jobs in Australia.
I’ve worked a lot with creative students in the music and creative arts,
visual arts um… areas.
And I encourage them to create a blog,
to highlight the employee ability skills they’re are developing
to reflect on what insight they gain into the career
but also to upload for the criterions a clip of them doing musical performance.
And what this is also in developing of course is digital skills.
A resume is crucially important
when you look for job overseas.
Unfortunately many of us don’t know this.
are willing to spend $100,000
in 3-4 years study for a degree,
but don’t want to spend $100 or $150
to polish a resume.
This is an interesting phenomenon.
That’s all for this episode.
Have another look at the key points listed here.
And stay tuned for more tips for successful job hunting.
