As one of the most popular destinations for young people hoping to get a top class education,
Australia now attracts tens of thousands of international students each year to universities across the country.
After spending so much precious time and money on university education down under,
finding a dream job after graduation becomes the ultimate end
for most international students and a perfect endnote to their Australian experience.
But with 180,000 Australian students graduating each year,
to land yourself a dream job isn’t easy.
This season we are going to take you inside the minds of some most sought-after employers
and career consultants to find out the secrets of successful job hunting.
In this episode, we are going to talk about where to find all the best job opportunities.
You know, organizations like ours are often at a campus,
um, during the year in particularly during the, feel like, campaign period.
And so take that opportunity to meet people.
Those people actually come up to us, build a conversation, build some kind of relationship, ask good questions.
Um, they do stick on mind a little bit.
If you don’t do that, then you are on the risk
of just being one of thousands of people who applies to work for us.
Remember, an employer will be just as interested in something that somebody did
as a community service opportunity, as a job that they might have.
A young person may have a limited amount of work experience,
but they can be engaged in a variety of community experience,
where they can demonstrate how they could take initiative, get work done,
and use social media to interact, to communicate,
to build in network of individuals who understand what you did.
When thinking about where to find a job,
I think it depends on who you know
If you know someone importany at a bank or one of the big accounting firms
or someone you know socially,
you may find out about jobs from them
These jobs won’t be advertised online.
Join more social groups
such as university clubs,
they often hold events with big companies.
Participate in these events
if you have chance,
And you’ll get to meet contacts.
The other platform that I think is increasingly important is LinkedIn.
As the world’s fastest growing professional social media platform,
students need to be building a profile,
and understanding the power of the LinkedIn platform.
I find that the real game changer in terms of finding people to talk to.
I suggest students spend some time
setting up their LinkedIn account
This helps them to expand their network.
Many jobs won’t be advertised
on company websites,
or Seek(an Australian job search website).
I think it is really important that students are clear about
any approach they make to another person. Be there an alumni,
someone working in their industry? So they might say,
“I am studying economics at the University of Melbourne.
I understand that you are also a graduate of the faculty of business and economics.
I’m at that moment trying to find out
what pathway I want to take my career
and I wonder whether you might be someone who I can speak to about that.
I understand that you have currently working within the finance department of a multinational
and I am just wondering how you got to that point in your career.”
Giving some time limit around that as well,
so that the person is not expecting that you might, they might need to talk for an hour.
I am asking whether it might be appropriate to come and meet them to speak about that.
Um, being curious is very important
by being clear about what you want to achieve there.
That is all for this episode.

and stay tuned for more tips for successful job hunting.
