News Review: from BBC Learning English
大家好 欢迎收看新闻评论
Hello, and welcome to news review,
本节目将教您学习最新新闻报道中出现的用语
the program where we will show you how to use the language from the latest news stories
应用在日常英语中
in your everday English.
音乐
[music]
大家好 我是尼尔 和我一起的是凯瑟琳 你好 凯瑟琳
Hello, I’m Neil and joining in me is Catherine. Hello, Catherine.
-你好 尼尔-今天的内容是什么呢?
-Hello, Neil.-What’s our story today?
今天的内容是你的移动设备如何
Our story today is telling us how your mobile devices
使你陷入危机
could be putting you in danger.
哦 天呐 听起来很严重
Oh, dear, that sounds very serious,
接下来我们就听听新闻报道的更多细节
let’s hear more from this BBC news report.
政府犯罪防预专家曾经警告过
Government crime prevention experts have warned that
那些需要用到很多小型电子设备的用户
the rising number of gadgets being used by consumers
更容易成为网络罪犯们的目标
puts them at a higher risk of being targeted by cyber criminals.
在一份联合报告中 英国国家犯罪调查局
In a joint report, the National Crime Agency
和网络安全中心警告说
and the National Cyber Security Centre have
智能手机 智能手表 电视
warned that smartphones, watches, televisions
甚至连健身追踪器
and even fitness trackers could
都可以被用来获取私人数据
be used to access private data,
这会导致用户被罪犯勒索
so that users can be held to ransom.
所以 今天讨论的就是关于手机
So, today’s story there about devices meaning mobile phones,
健身追踪器等诸如此类的
fitness trackers, all the kinds of things that
许多人每天携带并使用的电子设备
a lot of people carry with them and use everyday.
但是 这里面有个问题就是
but there is a problem that people…
罪犯们可以通过这些设备获取用户的数据
criminals can access your data through these devices
并且很可能的使用这些信息从用户身上获取不法收益
and potentially use that information to get money from you basically.
好的 那么 你已经在各类新闻网站上
All right, ok, well, you’ve been looking at this story
了解了情况
on the various news websites and picked out three words
并且摘录下了我们等会儿会讨论的三个词语
that we can use to talk about it.
是的 我们摘录了 “盛行” “勒索” 和 “攻击目标” 这三个词语
Yes,we have ‘rise of’, ‘held to ransom’ and ‘targeting’.
“盛行” “勒索” “攻击目标”
‘rise of’, ‘held to ransom’ and ‘targeting’.
首先第一个“盛行” 下面 这是怎么出现在新闻标题里的呢?
So, the first one ‘rise of’, how is that appearing in the headlines?
好 那么我们将进入BBC新闻网
ok,so we’ll go to the bbc news website,
然后我们可以看到:
and we have
#网络安全:专家警告黑客勒索日益盛行#
#Cyber security: Experts warn on rise of hacker ransoms#
所以“盛行”是指一种在短期内快速滋生的重大而强势的现象
So ‘rise of’ meaning growth of a significant or powerful phenomenon.
是的 “盛行”就像我们所熟知的那样是说滋生或增长
Yeah, ‘rise’ just basicly means growth or increase as we know
所以这和介词有关 是吧?
yeah,so this is all about the pre-position, isn’t it?
因为我们知道 ‘rise’意味着增长 嗯 但是’rise of ‘
because we know what rise means, increase…ah…but ‘rise of’…
呃……你可以用来描述某事物的增长
Yeah……sort of sometimes you can have a rise in something,
那通常意味着数字上的增长 比率上的增长
and that often means a rise in numbers, a rise in the rate.
‘a rise in’通常用于记录 意味着不仅是增长
It’s really recording when you say a rise in, it’s often just saying
还有着更多的含义-对
-that’s more of something.-right.
当我们说某样东西’rise of’
But when we say rise of within the thing that we talking about
有着影响人们的想法的作用
has the idea of its influences,
并着力影响着人们的行为
and increase that influences the way people behave.
-是的-而且这通常都会是一个意义重大的增长
–Yeah.–And it’s often a significant increase.
对已发生的事会有巨大影响
causing a big impact on what happens.
类似于现象或是一种运动
It is sort of phenomenon or of movement
从这种意义上来说 黑客威胁的上升
So in this case, the rise of hacker ransoms,
意味着我们因为这个必须去改变一些我们所做的
means that we have to change what we do,because of this
-来应对与日俱增的黑客威胁-对
-this increasing hacker ransoms.-Yeah.
有一种这种事物是新出现的意思
And there is sense of this thing is kind of new
-通常……-或者说现在变得很重要
-Often…-…or of significance now.
对 有可能……有时候我们用“rise of”这个词组
Yeah, it might have…sometimes we use “rise of”
嗯……是因为某事在过去曾经经常发生
Um…because something wasn’t really happened, it happened a lot in the past.
然后它停止了 可是它现在又发生了
Then it stopped, and then it’s happening again.
但是它主要是指
But the idea is that
-一些给我们带来很多影响的现象
some kind of phenomenon is really having an influence on the things we do.
-比如网络犯罪和高科技犯罪等等-是的
-Likes cyber cirme like technology or all of the things that…-Yeah.
因为科技的快速发展
Because of the rise of technology.
“科学技术的兴起” 这个固定搭配很好
Yeah, the rise of technologies is a good set phrase to
而且这真的改变了我们生活的方式
think about and it’s really changes the way we live
智能手机的兴起
The rise of the smartphone,
和我们经常看的电影名字
and we have sometimes film titles,
例如机器的兴起 之类的电影名
I think the rise of the sixth thought, the rise of…machines of film titles
都给我们展示了一些强大的有意义的东西的到来
that shows us something is coming to be powerful and significant
我们不仅可以用它说
we can use it not just for uh…
社会现象改变着社会
phenomenon for social things that changing society,
我们也可以把它用在人身上
we can also use it for people,
形容某人变得十分强大
when somebody becomes very powerful,
形容这个人的崛起
we can talk about the rise of this person.
例如 唐纳德特朗普
For example, Donald Trump.
唐纳德特朗普近来变得十分强大并有影响力
the rise of Donald Trump has become very powerful and influential recently.
所以我们可以纵观历史 说他变得更强大了
so we could look at him in history and say yeah he is becoming more powerful,
这就是唐纳德特朗普的崛起
It’s a rise of Donald Trump.
[音乐]
[music]
好 那么让我们进入下一头条
Ok, moving on to our next headline.
电报上说
Uh, The Telegraph
#网络安全负责人警告
#Smartphones, TVs and watches
智能手机 电视和手表都可能会被黑客侵犯#
could be held to ransom by hackers, cyber security chiefs warn#
所以被勒索
So ‘held to ransom’
是通过被威胁进行的
made to do something by threats.
是的 如果我们看下勒索某人的原始意义
Yes, and if we look at this sort of the original meaning of
就是指
to hold somebody to ransom,
把某人的家人带走
and what you do is you take somebody’s family member,
然后你说
You lock them up somewhere, and then you say:
“还想要你的家人就乖乖把钱交出来”
“Give me some money and you can have your family member back!”
这是最根源的意思 它和绑架处处相关
And that’s the original meaning, it’s related to kidnap.
你用来赎回被绑架者的钱就是赎金
the money you pay to release a kidnapped person is a ransom.
是的 但这里我们所涉及的不是人
Yes, but we haven’t got people involved here.
是什么?是信息
Have we? It’s information.
就是信息 没错 实际上
It’s information…yeah absolutely, in fact
这里的东西都是实际设备 你的智能手机 电视和手表
the thing here it is actual device smartphone and your TV and your watches,
所以当黑客入侵你的数据并说
so when a hacker gets in to your data and says:
“把钱交出来 不然我就删了你的照片 或者锁了你的手机”
“Give me some money or I will delete your photographs or I will lock your phone,
给我钱的话我就解锁你的手机”
“Give me some money and I will unlock it!”
那些钱也被称为赎金
That money again is called a ransom.
这通常都是钱
it’s usually money,
你也可以要求别人帮你做一件事
It can be an action you can ask someone to do something
来交换这些信息
to get …to get this information back,
是呀 关键就是要有报酬 因为你拿走了一些东西
Yeah… but it’s the idea of payment, because you’ve taken something away.
就像很多这种表达方式
And like a lot of these expressions,
开始有特定意义 然后又有引申义 不是吗
they start of the very specific meaning and then they expand, don’t they?
显而易见 所以你可以以一种轻松幽默的方式进行询问
Exactly…So you can actually use it in a quite light-hearted humorous way.
-可以的-例如
-you can yes…-for example,
前几天你要求我做事来换回点什么
You held me to ransom in the other day.
我做了 我做了 没错 我这样做了
I did…I did, yes, I did
因为我 我知道你想让我帮你做词汇节目
Because I…I know you want me to help you with your vocabulary program
是的 我还倾尽所有东西来帮助你
Yep…And I got all that stuff ready to help you.
但我最先想让你帮我的是我的语法节目
But first I want you to help me with my grammar program.
嗯 在这之前你都没有想帮助过我
Yeah, and you are not going to help me until then.
-不 我勒索你-你在勒索我
-No, I’m holding you to ransom. -You’re holding me to ransom.
-我喜欢这样做-当然 谢谢!
-I like doing that.-indeed yes. Thank you!
音乐
[music]
我们的下一个词语是 targeting
Our next item of vocabulary we have ‘targeting’.
嗯 我们来看Books Free Press
Yes, and we’re going to go to Books Free Press.
标题是
And the headline is:
#网络安全主管警告了 黑客会攻击
#Cyber security chiefs warn over hackers
智能手机 手表和健身设备#
targeting smartphones, watches and fitness devices#
在看“瞄准”之前 我们先快速浏览一下“智能手机”
And before we look at ‘targeting’, we’ll just have a quick look at ‘smart phones’
在这份报纸上它是两个词汇
It’s written as two words in this newspaper,
在另一份上它是一个词
another one it was one word.
对 这种情况经常发生 它是一个复合名词
Yep. That often happens as it’s a compound noun.
-是的-两个词合成了一个词
-Yep.-the two words become one
这就是一个新单词的诞生
and in that process of becoming a new word.
in that process something come in a word.
有时你看到一个变化词
Sometimes you see a variation,

因此你看到两个单词 通常都是连着一个连字符号
So you see a written with two words, sometimes with a hyphen,
然后慢慢的这就成了一个单词
and then eventually and usually it just becomes one word.
是的 你可以看到这样的变化
Yeah you can see that process
因为在不同的网站上可能会有不同的写法
because it’s expect…if you…it’s written differently on different websites.
他们都没有错 这只是一个语言成长的过程
They are not wrong, that just is part of process of language.
所以targeting这个词出现在“网络安全专家警示黑客攻击智能手机”
So ‘targeting’ #cyber security chiefs warn over hackers targeting smartphones#
“瞄准” 所以凯瑟琳我喜欢飞镖 是的
‘Targeting’ so Catherine I like darts…yep
当我们扔飞镖 嗯 射到一个靶子上
As we throw a small arrow…yep…at a target
是的 或者剑术 先鞠躬 再射击
Yes or archery, bowing out…and you try to hit…yes…something
现在我就用我的笔
Actually I’m actually now with my pen
瞄准你的脸 把你的脸当做我的目标
Targeting your face as if I…your face is a target
噢我没有击中 不管怎样目标就是
Oh I missed the target! Anyway a target is something that
你扔向或瞄准的东西
you throw or aim something at.
在刚刚那种况下 你的脸就真的是我的目标
And in that case you can have a literally …your face was the target,
或者你可以用它作为一个动词 隐喻地表明
or you can use it as a verb, metaphorically to say
我的目标或者我的目标去做某事
I’m aiming or my goal is to do something…yeah
这就意味着直接指向某些东西 以某些东西作为目标
That means directing something…yep…at something.
是的 就是说 黑客就在瞄准智能手机
Yes, absolutely. And the hackers are targeting the smartphones,
黑客以侵入人们的智能手机为目的
hackers are aiming at getting into people’s smartphones.
我们在谈论广告活动或电视节目时
And we use this ahh…often when we’re talking about
经常用到这个
advertising campaigns or television programs.
最明显的体现在广告中
Most definitely is used a lot in advertising when we say that
我们说特定的广告针对特定人群
Particular adverts are targeted at particular people.
例如 许多日间节目针对的是女性或退休人士
For example, a lot of daytime television is targeted at women or retired people.
嗯 因为她们大多数都会呆在家里看电视
Yep…because a lot of them stay at home and watch TV
是的 而这个节目呢就是以国际上的英语学习者为目标的
Yep, and this program is targeted at international learners of English.
正是这样 我们都希望我们能达到我们的目标
-Exactly!-and we hope we are hitting our target.
我也希望如此
I hope we are.
音乐
[music]
在回顾今天的单词之前
Before we recap today’s vocabulary,
我们仍然有一个脸书挑战是关于hacking 的
we of course have a Facebook challenge we’ve been talking about ‘hacking’.
在数码时代里
And in the digital world,
To hack这个词语
the word ‘to hack’
意思就是非法的侵入某人的计算机或电话系统
means to get into someone’s computer or phone system illegally,
但是什么才是to hack的原始意思呢?
but what was the original meaning of ‘to hack’?
是 A 用锤子打开
Was it A: to hit with hammer;
B 锯开某种东西
B: to saw something open;
还是 C 粗略地说 呢?
Or C: to cut something roughly?
大家的反应是怎么样的呢?
How was response?
回答的不错 大多数人都答对了A

的意思是C 粗糙地切某样东西
Means C: to cut something roughly.
Means C: to cut something roughly

So well done who guys and everybody else who said answer C.
So well done who guys and everybody else who said answer C.
你们以及每一个答C的人都做的很好
So well done to you guys and everybody else who said answer C.
From now can you just recap the words we’ve talked today?
From now can you just recap the words we’ve talked today?
From now can you just recap the words we’ve talked today?
凯瑟琳 现在你能复述一下我们今天看的单词吗
Catherine, now, can you just recap the words we’ve looked at today?
I can. We had ‘rise of’…
I can. We had ‘rise of’…
I can. We had ‘rise of’…
可以的 有“rise of”
I can. We had ‘rise of’
意思是一种意义重大的强大的增长的现象
which means ‘growth of’ a significant powerful phenomenon.
Which means ‘growth of’ a significant powerful phenomenon.

还有“held to ransom”意思是被威胁做某事
