I’m really grateful that I get a chance to play for everyone.
刚刚我弹的是约瑟夫·霍夫曼的曲子
And the song that I just played was by Josef Hofmann.
曲名是《万花筒》
It’s called “Kaleidoscope.”
霍夫曼是19世纪末波兰的钢琴家 同时也是一位作曲家
And Hofmann is a Polish pianist and composer of the late 19th century,
他被公认为史上最伟大的钢琴家之一
and he’s widely considered one of the greatest pianists of all time.
我还想为大家演奏另一首曲子
I have another piece that I’d like to play for you.
是罗伯特·舒曼创作的《阿贝格变奏曲》
It’s called “Abegg Variations,” by Robert Schumann,
他是19世纪的德国作曲家
a German 19th-century composer.
阿贝格的英文Abegg正好对应音名 A-B-E-G-G
The name “Abegg” is actually A-B-E-G-G,
也就是这首曲子的主旋律
and that’s the main theme in the melody.
(弹奏A,B,E,G,G音)
(Plays the notes A, B, E, G and G)
它的灵感来自于舒曼一位女性朋友的姓氏
That comes from the last name of one of Schumann’s female friends.

但后面他把这首曲子献给了他妻子
But he wrote that for his wife.

所以 如果你仔细听的话
So actually, if you listen carefully,
应该能听出这首曲子里有五段变奏
there are supposed to be five variations on this Abegg theme.
这首曲子写于1834年左右
It’s written around 1834,
虽然是首旧曲子 还是希望你们能喜欢
so even though it’s old, I hope you’ll like it.

接下来就是我最讨厌的一个环节了
Now comes the part that I hate.
但是 因为安德森先生跟我说
Well, because Mr. Anderson told me
这部分叫做“同步和流动”
that this session is called “Sync and Flow,”
我就在想“有什么是我知道但你们这些天才却不知道的呢?”
I was wondering, “What do I know that these geniuses don’t?”

所以我只能聊聊音乐作曲
So, I’ll talk about musical composition,
虽然我也不知道该从哪里说起
even though I don’t know where to start.
我是怎样作曲的呢
How do I compose?
我觉得雅马哈音乐在教授作曲方面做得很棒
I think Yamaha does a really good job of teaching us how to compose.
首先 我会想许多小段的音乐旋律
What I do first is, I make a lot of little musical ideas
这个完全可以在钢琴上即兴发挥
you can just improvise here at the piano —
然后我会选出其中一段作为主旋律
and I choose one of those to become my main theme, my main melody,
就像你们刚刚听的阿贝格
like the Abegg that you just heard.
一旦定下主题 我就要决定:
And once I choose my main theme, I have to decide:
在这么多音乐风格中 我要选择哪一种
Out of all the styles in music, what kind of style do I want?
今年 我创作了一种浪漫主义风格
And this year, I composed a Romantic style.
为了找灵感 我去听李斯特和柴可夫斯基
So for inspiration, I listened to Liszt and Tchaikovsky
所有著名的浪漫主义作曲家的作品
and all the great Romantic composers.
然后 我跟几个老师把整首曲子的框架做了出来
Next, I make the structure of the entire piece with my teachers.
老师们帮我构思了整个框架
They help me plan out the whole piece.
然后就是很难的部分:我需要把我的音乐想法都填补到这个框架里
And then the hard part is filling it in with musical ideas,
说它难是因为我要动脑子想
because then you have to think.

之后 等整首曲子差不多成……
And then, when the piece takes somewhat of a solified form —
成……对不起……等它差不多成型了
solidified, excuse me — solidified form,
我就要给这个曲子润色 推敲细节
you’re supposed to actually polish the piece, polish the details,
完善作品的整体效果
and then polish the overall performance of the composition.
除了钢琴之外我还很喜欢画画
And another thing that I enjoy doing is drawing.
画画 因为我很喜欢画……嗯……日本漫画
Drawing, because I like to draw, you know, Japanese anime art.
最近日本漫画在青少年中非常流行
I think that’s a craze among teens right now.
然后有一次我发现
And once I realized it,
作曲和作画很相似
there’s a parallel between creating music and creating art,
因为你画画的动机或者是最初的想法就是
because for your motive, or your little initial idea for your drawing,
你要画的角色 你要先决定画什么样的角色
it’s your character — you want to decide who you want to draw,
是不是要创作一个新的角色
or if you want to draw an original character.
然后你又要决定 要怎么画
And then you want to decide: How are you going to draw the character?
比如说 是在一张纸上画呢 还是在电脑上画
Like, am I going to use one page? Am I going to draw it on the computer?
还是说要像漫画书那样把两张纸拼在一起画
I’m gonna use two-page spread like a comic book?
因为那样可能看起来效果会华丽一些
For a more grandiose effect, I guess.
然后就要开始给这个角色画草图
And then you have to do the initial sketch of the character,
这就跟我先给曲子设计框架一样
which is like your structure of a piece,
然后你再用上铅笔 钢笔 各种各样的工具
and then you add pen and pencil, and whatever details that you need —
这就是给画润色
that’s polishing the drawing.
这两者之间还有一个共同点 就是我做这两件事时候的心境
And another thing that both of these have in common is your state of mind,
因为我知道 我跟很多十几岁的人一样 很容易分心
because I know I’m one of those teenagers that are really easily distracted.
所以如果我作业写不下去了
So if I’m trying to do homework and I don’t feel like it,
我就开始画画 或者……呃……随便做些什么
I’ll try to draw or, you know, waste my time.
但是有时候如果我发现自己也没办法去画画
And then what happens is, sometimes I absolutely can’t draw
或者是去作曲
or I can’t compose at all,
那就说明我脑子里东西太满了
and then it’s like there’s too much on your mind.
没办法集中注意力到我要做的事上面
You can’t focus on what you’re supposed to do.
有时候 如果你打算精心地利用时间并且努力地想做出一些东西来
And sometimes, if you manage to use your time wisely and work on it,
你的确是能做到 但是那样出来的东西太刻意了
you’ll get something out of it, but it doesn’t come naturally.
事实上 如果奇迹发生
What happens is, if something magical happens,
你的灵感突然降临了
if something natural happens to you,
你能在下一秒就创作出非常棒的作品
you’re able to produce all this beautiful stuff instantly,
这也是我所认为的“艺术创作的自然流动”
and then that’s what I consider “flow,”
因为当一切都合拍了 你就能所向披靡
because that’s when everything clicks and you’re able to do anything.
你会感觉自己好像站在了顶峰 你可以做出任何东西
You feel like you’re on top of your game and you can do anything you want.
今天我不打算弹我自己写的曲子
I’m not going to play my own composition today because,
虽然我已经写完了 但是因为它太长了
although I did finish it, it’s way too long.
我今天打算要展示一下即兴作曲
Instead, I’d like to try something called “improvisation.”
我手上有七张卡片
I have here seven note cards,
分别代表七个音名
one with each note of the musical alphabet.
我想请一个人上台来帮我选出五张
And I’d like someone to come up here and choose five —
随便谁上来选出五张
anyone to come up here and choose five —
然后我把它们谱成某种风格的曲子
and then I can make it into some sort of melody,
即兴演奏出来
and I’ll improvise it.
哇 有人举手了 耶
Wow. A volunteer, yay!
