Hello, welcome to the class.
So you’ve decided to take the IELTS exam.
Well done, this is the best decision that you have made,
because this the exam that is recognised worldwide
and it’s surely going to take you countries.
In this lesson, I’m going to help you
how to score better in the IELTS speaking test.
Yes, but how really?
I’m going to share with you some frequently asked questions
that are FAQs that my dear students have asked me in their emails.
And I have taken that up in this lesson and I’m going to start with you
with the FAQs in a short while.
Before that I’m going to share with youthe structure of the IELTS exam.
So the IELTS speaking test is a one on one interaction
between you and the examiner.
There are 3 parts to the IELTS test.
The first part is a long uh not a very long actually a short interview
which lasts from about 3 to 4 minutes.
It’s on 3 different topics.
It includes some general questions
and an introduction between you and the examiner.
Part two is the long turn. But who is it a long turn for?
Is it for you? No. Yes, it is a long turn for you.
In this session you will be given a cue card with certain prompts and a topic
and you have to speak on it for about 2 to 3 minutes.
You’ll get one minute to prepare.
This part also lasts for about 3 to 4 minutes.
And part 3 is an analytical discussion between you and the examiner,
where you need to give certain details of the topic of the discussion
and this part lasts for 3 to 4 minutes again.
Overall the speaking test lasts for 11 to 15 minutes.
Stay with me in this lesson and know some frequently asked questions for the IELTS speaking tests
Speaking Test Ielts FAQS
So let’s start with the frequently asked questions.
Let’s have a look at the first question that my student has sent me, asked me actually.
Ummm.. Can I ask the examiner to repeat his question?
Do you also have that question? Well you can ask the examiner to repeat his question.
It’s absolutely fine, if you don’t understand you could tell him,
“对不起我没听懂你刚才说什么 你能再说一遍吗？” 这绝对是可以的
“Sorry I didn’t understand what you said. Could you please repeat it.” It’s absolutely fine
but don’t it over and over again. It might affect your fluency.
Let’s look at the next question.
Should I correct my mistakes while speaking?
Umm it’s actually alright to correct your mistakes while speaking. You can do it a few times
but again if you repeat and correct your mistakes again and again,
then it’s surely going to affect your fluency and you might have a low score.
So try not to correct yourself too much. If you’ve made a mistake, if you’ve fumbled,
just move on because remember you also have a time limit in the exam.
I hope that was helpful. Let’s look at the next one.
Ahh.. What if the examiner interrupts your answer?
Yes, that happens sometimes.
You don’t have to really worry if the examiner interrupts your answer.
It can happen, it’s just fine.
There could be three reasons for it which you need to be very careful about.
The first reason is time limit.
Probably you are just going on and on and on with your answer and the examiner must move on.
So that situation he will quickly move on to the second question and you don’t have to feel offended,
just be confident and speak naturally for the second answer.
The other reason could be that you have gone off topic.
Yes, it happens sometimes that you’ve just gone off topic.
You were asked to describe your favourite time in the day that is evening
and you start talking about your hobbies or interests, that’s not just right at all.
And the third thing could be that the examiner is satisfied with your language.
Yes, maybe the language which you have provided in that answer is quite satisfactory and
now the examiner wants to check other aspects of your English.
I hope this was helpful.
Let’s see the next one,umm…
So this person says, can I use my body language?
Can I use body language while speaking?
um.. actually the examiner is only interested in testing your English language skills.
He is not interested in your body language and it doesn’t matter
how you move your hands or how you shake your head，it’s absolutely fine.
We find it quite natural to use our body language while speaking
coz this is also one way of expressing yourself
So if you want to use your body language, feel free, there’s no problem with that. However,
don’t overdo it.
The next question that we have,
is the speaking test face to face with an examiner or by computer?Um… that’s funny now.
Um… that’s funny now. Of course the speaking test is face to face, one on one interaction.
As I said the beginning of the video between you and the examiner
and there is absolutely no option to do your speaking test on the computer.
So don’t even think that, be prepared for a face to face, one on one interaction with the examiner.
With this, we’ve completed the general questions that my students have asked me.
And now I’m going to move on to the questions task wise.
We are going to discuss the questions for task one, task two and task three a
head in the video stay tuned.
With this, we now come to task one FAQs.
Let’s see the questions that my students have asked me for task one of the IELTS speaking test.
So the first question is,
What should I do first when I enter the exam room？
umm… that’s quite a nice question, isn’t it? So when you enter the exam room first what you should do is,
you should greet the examiner back, right?
He will greet you he will say“hello””welcome”or something like that
你可以回打招呼说“hello””hi””good morning”或是“good evening”不好意思 是“good afternoon”
You can greet him back by saying, hello, hi, good morning or good evening, sorry good afternoon.
It’s better if you keep it slightly formal coz you are in a formal situation.
Next what you need to do is you need to an ID check.
You need to show your ID proof to the examiner which could be a driving license
or may be a passport or something else for that matter. I hope this was helpful.
Let’s look at the next one. What if my answer includes the next question on the examiner’s list?
Are you also worried about that? Then don’t be.
You know what the examiner has a long list of all the questions.
and if at all your first answer includes the answer to the next question,
it’s alright. He will skip that question and ask you another question instead and that’s perfectly okay.
They can choose which question to ask and which question not to ask.
So don’t be afraid about adding more information,
it won’t affect your score negatively but rather positively
because if you speak at length, your scoring in fluency.
Let’s look at the next question,
Why do I need to expand my answers in the speaking test?
Yes so possibly I think the student of mine has already taken some coaching for the IELTS speaking test
and that’s why he knows that the tutors always suggest you to expand your answers
and actually all those tutors are correct.
You must expand your answers for the IELTS speaking test and the reason is
If you want to score band 6 and above，as I said before in the criterion of fluency
then it’s good if you expand your answer and speak at length,
so that the examiner knows that you are willing to speak in English and you are not afraid.
Now that we have already looked at the questions for task one,
now we are going to look at questions for task two.
I’ve seen that a lot of student have problems with task two
and I’m going to solve that for you now.
So I hope you remember what you have to do in task 2
You will be given a cue card with a topic and certain prompts
and you have to speak on it for about one to two minutes
And you have to prepare on it for about one mimute.
It’s important that you use that time very well for preparing.
So let’s look at the first question. Uhhh.. can I choose my topic to talk about in part two.
No, not at all. You cannot choose your topic to talk about.
Whatever topic the examiner has given you, you have to speak on that topic
whether you know or not.
If you at all know less about the topic, the I suggest
you follow and use the bullet points which are going to help you a big deal.
Now look at the second question. Can I ask the examiner to change the topic?
As I said, you can’t choose and you can’t even change your topic.
whatever topic has been given to you you have to speak on the same topic
You cannot choose the topic. Sad..not so sad really,
you will be able to speak on it, be confident, don’t be afraid.
Now we are going to look at the topics in task three.
I hope you know what part three includes.
So the Part three includes an analytical discussion between you and the examiner where
you need to give reasons, effects and probably even a personal experience on the topic. So
in this one, you have to speak really at length. My student has a very interesting question here.
Let me read it out for you, what if I don’t have any idea for the answers in part three?
That’s quite possible. Sometimes you might get a topic for which you don’t have an answer
or maybe you never thought of it before. For example, umm what are the benefits
of space exploration for humankind or for mankind? And you are like, uhh. You have no
idea about the topic. So then you can just be very honest and tell the examiner,
“I’m sorry, I’ve never thought about this before. I’m sure there are some benefits to mankind
of space exploration. So here also you are using a very good range of vocabulary and
it’s going to fetch you some good brownie points. So don’t worry about it. If you don’t
know anything about the topic, be honest. Could be possible that the examiner might
just change the topic.
With this we have already looked at task three FAQs.
I’d also like to add that the IELTS
speaking test is assessed on 4 criteria.
The first one is fluency and coherence, the next
the next one is lexical resource and after that grammatical range and accuracy and the fourth one is pronunciation.
If you want to score awesome in all the 4 criteria,
then I suggest you watch my video series on IELTS speaking test
and also if you have any other questions, other than the ones I’ve already answered,
then please leave them in the comments and I’ll be glad to answer them for you.
