How to bunny hop a mountain bike - tips & mistakes

Bunny hopping is a technique that everyone wants to master.
兔跳是一个人人都想掌握的技巧
But some riders have a lot of trouble learning.

If you’re having trouble and feel hopeless,

this tutorial is just for you.

To bunny hop,
想要做出兔跳
you need to lift your front wheel off the ground,
你需要将前轮拉起离地
jump upwards and push your bars forwards.
向上跃起并向前压车把
To do this, you need to get your front wheel off the ground.
要完成这些 你需要先把前轮拉离地面
So let’s start there and talk about what could go wrong.
因此我们从这步说起 看看有哪些误区
First of all, if you’re small, like me,
第一 如果你像我一样身材瘦小
you’ll need a small bike.
那你需要一辆小车
If you’re big, you will be OK in a big bike.
如果你体型偏大 用大车也可以
This is important because you’ll need plenty of space between you and the bike

to pull up and transfer weight around.

So make sure your bike is the right size for you.

Second, bunny hops are much easier on a mountain bike

with an aggressive slanted back geometry.
做兔跳会容易很多
By this, I mean that the top of your seat tube is lower than your bars.
什么意思呢 我们知道车座管顶端要比车把低一点
Dropping your saddle is an obvious way to achieve this geometry,
很明显 要变成前面说的那种结构 调低车座就行了
but some bikes just aren’t shaped right for this.
但有些自行车的设计不适合这样
In that case, you can get riser bars
这种情况你可以升高车把
or a taller stem which should help a little.
或加高立把 应该会有点帮助
For the most part, most newer mountain bikes have a pretty aggressive geometory.
新一点的山地车大多都采用这种结构
So unless your bike is really old,
所以除非你的车真的很旧
you’re probably not gonna have this problem.
不然一般不会有这个问题
Third, you probably have front suspension
第三 你的车大概率有前避震
and maybe even rear suspension.
甚至可能也有后避震
Beacuse suspension designed to absorb changes in the terrain,
因为避震的设计是为了缓冲地形变化
it will also absorb any movement you make on the bike.
它也会在你做动作时吸收作用力
Thereby, dampening your efforts at a bunny hop.
因此避震会抵消部分你做兔跳时施加的力气
To counteract this, you need to preload.
针对这种情况 你要学会预施压
Preloading is when you compress your suspension,
预施压是指当你压缩避震器时
and use the recoil to work with you, instead of against you.
要借助回弹力起跳 而不是受回弹力阻碍
On suspension forks, this means pushing down before you pop up,
对于避震前叉 你要在起跳前向下施压
kind of like the spring on a pogo stick.
有点类似弹簧高跷的弹簧
You see how the shocks actually help you pop up off the ground?
看到了么 避震装置其实能帮你跳起来
Well, they won’t unless you preload.
但前提是你要学会预施压
For bikes with the rear suspension,
对于有后避震的车
you need to pull back even further
你需要更加用力的回拉
to preload the rear shock before you pop up.
在起跳前给后避震也预施压
So that’s pretty much it.

Alright, so what I’m going to show you guys here is a bunny hop frame by frame,

so you can really dig into what’s going on here.

So this is the approach and this is important,

because this is when the preload is being done.

So now, notice.

I’m holding on to those bars and I’m bending my arms.

And now keep an eye right here.

That’s where the suspention forks are gonna compress.
这里是避震前叉压缩的地方
Now I’m going down like I’m gonna jump.
现在我压低身体准备起跳
Bending down on those bars,
弯腰 身体贴近车把
and pushing them down.
向下给车把施压
So maybe you can’t see my…
也许你看不到
You can’t see the pressure I’m putting on with my arms,
你看不到我的手臂在发力施压
but this is not just a kind of smooth thing.
但这并不像是那种轻松连贯的动作
I’m really pushing down on the bars when I’m doing this.

And look at how this suspention forks are compressing.
你能看到避震前叉是在被压缩的
That is your preload.
那就是预施压
Now it’s going to be a fluid motion, right as you finish compressing.
现在放的是预施压结束后的连贯画面
You’re gonna pull up.
你要拉起车把
And now, the next step is gonna be
接下来的一步是
bring the bars right up to your waist and stand straight up.
将车把往腰的方向拉 然后站直
So I’m pulling those bars,
我在拉动车把
straight up to my waist,
向上往腰部拉
and standing straight up.

Now a lot of people, like to say that

you’re going to angle your toes forwards to bunny hop.

I don’t really think of it that way.

I think of it more like my feet are always going to be level with the ground.
我觉得更像是我的脚一直与地面保持水平
When I’m in position like this,
当我处在这个位置时
I want you to think of a pogo stick.

If you’ve ever used a pogo stick,
如果你玩过弹簧高跷
you can stand on it and you can hop around.

Your feet are not clipped in.

Your feet are not strapped in.

But have you ever questioned why your feet stay on the pogo stick?

Of course they do.

You’re holding onto the bars at the top,

and you’re pushing down.

So you’re kind of, holding the pogo stick to your feet.

And that’s exactly what we are going to do here with the bunny hop.

Because I continue to pull those bars towards my feet,
因为我一直拉着车把 用脚抵住车
now my feet kind of are angled forwards.

Now another point I want to make here is that it’s not really

the push forward that’s getting you off the ground.

It’s that initial pop that’s gonna make the bike airborne.
是最开始的一跳让车离开地面
See. Watch this.

Pull the bike up to your waist,

and watch the bike start to launch off the ground already.

See, it’s going up in the air.
看 车开始腾空了
I haven’t even started pushing the bars forwards.

It’s pulling those bars like a bastard.
我像狂徒一般猛拉车把
Go balls-out. Pull the bars right up to your waist.
用尽全力往腰部拉车把
You can even see the back tire.
你甚至能看到后轮的变化
You know, compressing down into the ground and then…
后轮胎和地面挤压之后变形
You start going up.
你开始向上弹起
Then you level it out.
然后再把车放平
You push your bars forwards so that the back wheels level with the front wheel.
你要往前推车把 让后轮和前轮在一条水平线上
And that kind of gets you further off the ground.
这个动作能让你离地更远
But that’s not actually what’s propelling the bike upwards.
但并不是它让车腾空而起
That initial pop is what’s propelling the bike upwards.

So let’s just watch this…

Preload, pull the bike up to your waist and push forwards.

It’s decompressing as I’m pulling the bike up to my waist.

And that’s what’s propelling the bike off the ground.

Just like a pogo stick.

You’re standing there.

Pulling the bike towards your feet, and up.

And that’s how you bunny hop.
