can’t stop smoking, can’t stop eating, can’t stop thinking.
没有什么可以比思考更能让人上瘾的了
Thinking is the greater addiction than any of these.

Your choice then is not to understand more,

or to bring some intellectual analysis to the practice,

So, to become more aware of the present moment as a practice

have perhaps little pointers in your office at home, in your car.
或者其他任何东西
Let’s say, present moment
作为当下的象征
or whatever or a symbol for it.
关注当下可以有多种方式
And there are different entry points into the present moment.
当下意识意味着
Present moment awareness means
浅层思考并不会完全消失
thinking subsides may not disappear completely,

but something else arises that is

primary, we call it presence or awareness.
佛教称之为留心
Buddhists call it mindfulness

你的脑海里充满了想法
your mind is full of things.

要活在当下 首先

What is primary is the underlying state of consciousness

which is presence, that’s the teaching,

but you can’t talk about that, it’s underlying.
但是……一个正在工作的标志
But the… a sign that is working
是当你在听时
is that while you listen,
没有任何想法 只是在认真听
there’s no thought, it’s just alert presence.
当所谓的老师停止讲课过了一会儿后
And when the so-called teacher stops speaking for a moment,
你依然保持认真的状态
the alert presence remains,
不需要再添任何东西
it does not need to be filled with anything.
就像现在
Like now.
还有什么需要去想的?没有
What is there to think about? Nothing.
所以 如果我们长期这样做
Now, if we do this for longer,
在某时某刻
if at…at some point,
你的头脑可能会启动并思考
your mind will probably start up and think
他还要在那里坐多久
how much longer is he going to sit there.

Because it’s a little entity.
它想要成长 所以它想要你紧张
It wants to grow so it wants your tension,
它试着以微妙的方式
and in subtle ways it tries to
得到你的注意 就是说…
get your attention, says…
它甚至会使用身体的感觉说…
it might even use a bodily feeling, says…
“天哪!我突然饿了 为什么我不…
“God! I’m hungry suddenly and why didn’t…
我要吃点东西!”
I need to eat something!”
然后你会想……
And then you think of a re…
“我要去哪家餐厅呢?”
“What restaurant I’m going to afterwards?”
这时当下就已经过了
And so the presence is gone,
你离开了 你在寻找你脑海中的餐厅
you are gone, you are looking for a restaurant in your mind,
这意味着是思考被当成
which means the thought used as…
一些身体反应使得
some bodily thing to make
思考变得毫无意义
thoughts out of it completely pointless
因为你没办法找到餐厅 因为你就站在这里
because you can’t find a restaurant because you’re standing here.

But it can use all kinds of things to manufacture most

So then you become like…

like my dog when it finds a scent.
然后突然 甚至狗…当它…
And then suddenly, even the do(g)… when…
那只狗没有戴狗带的时候
the dog is off leash,
通常有狗带会比较好 它只能围着你跑
usually leash is fine, she just runs around you.
但突然间它闻到了一股气味
But suddenly she picks up a scent,
然后它离开了 完全没意识到
and then she goes off completely unaware of
周围的环境或是任何东西 只是跟着香味走
surroundings or anything you just follows it.

[Sniff]
并且有时它会离开
And she could get lot she goes off
你的视线范围 就消失了
to the horizon sometimes, just disappears.

而那就是…你随着你的想法的样子
And that’s… when you follow a thought,
就像你可以唤醒接下来的20分钟一样
goes like that you can wake up 20 minutes later.
当思考…匆忙开始
When it started with…hastily
感到有点饿就想找餐厅
a little bit hungry and thinking of a restaurant
然后到最后想到…
and it ends up with thinking about how…
你的生活多么可怕啊
dreadful your life is.
