How Do Helicopters Fly?

and you have just seen it at work

and today we are gonna take a closer look at the science behind this balloon helicopter

and see what makes it work

so here are ur parts

our wings or blades that make our helicopter work

our balloons

and then these two pieces that attach the wings to the balloon

so let us take a closer look at each part and see how it all fits together

this round collar is what is going to allow me to stretch the balloon over that collar

and it stays on there and then this piece goes into this piece

and you can see I have this piece here allows me to attach my wings

so let us pull that back off

let us take a closer look at our wings

we have zoomed in a little on this wing

you can see there is a slot which fits into this piece

and there is a little part that allows it to clip in

so that it stays secure

now this wing there is a hollow section to the wing up here

and air is going to come out of this one little part right there on the wing

it will look something like this

when I blow through the wing you can see the air come out the end

so I have air coming out just the tip of the wing

and this piece is a little plastic part

that is going to make some noise as the air passes through this little piece it gives a little whistle

so now we are ready to snap the wings on

it is important to line up the slots

and make sure that these wings are all facing the same direction

you can hear it clip in

and now I have my wings all set up

now we are ready to blow up the balloon

and see this thing take off

the plastic collar makes it really simple for me to pinch the balloon

line the two up

connect them let us see if this thing works

this is called the balloon helicopter

because it spins and it flies

well what makes it fly

well this flies because these blades or these wings are made a certain way

and they spin

so let us take a closer look at spinning

why do these wings or blades spin

so I have air from the balloon forced out through our wings
是气球里的气体释放穿过翅膀
and the air is only coming out the tips of the wings
并且气体只能从翼尖出来
and as that air comes out it makes our wings spin
这样才能使翅膀旋转起来
now when those wings spin it allows air to flow over the top of these wings
翅膀旋转时 空气就从它上方流过
and these wings are made a certain way
加上翅膀是同一朝向
what do you notice about these wings
你注意到这些翅膀了吗?
well they are slanted

and that slant is necessary

why we will take a look at this

this is just the strip of a piece of paper

that has a curve when I hold it like this

and we are gonna see if we can take a closer look at the science

behind this with our piece of paper

it is going to act as our wing so

I am gonna hold my mouth right up to this piece of paper

and I am gonna blow over the top of this piece of paper

what do you think is gonna happen

it is a paper gonna Bend further

well take a look at this

so if you noticed when I blew over the top of this paper

the whole paper actually lifted up

it is the same science that is at work here

as the wind passes over the slanted wing it lifts up

but why does it do that

as the air flows over the wing
当空气流过翅膀表面
it is actually moving faster over the top of the wing

and there is less pressure on top of the wing

and there is more pressure underneath the wing
而翅膀下面的压力相对就增大
and that is what lifts the paper up

take a look at this

here I am taking a simple piece of paper and I folded it to create a tongue

let us look at what is happening here

I have air pressing down on the outside of it

but there is also air on the inside pressing back
模型内侧也有一个向外的气压
so it is not flattened or anything

well I want to play with the air pressure

to do that I am gonna blow quickly through my tunnel

remember quickly moving air lowers the pressure

so what do you think is gonna happen to my tunnel

let us take a closer look so that is blow through the tunnel

you will notice as I blow through the tunnel it actually flattens out

why well think about it

we said that as the air moves quickly the pressure is lower

that means the pressure pushing on the outside is greater or higher

and it flattens my tunnel

so how does that fit into this our balloon helicopter

well as our wings or our blades spin
当翅膀或叶片旋转时
air is forced over the top of the wing

and now that air is moving quicker over the top of it

so we have lower pressure up here

and there is higher pressure underneath

and that is what creates our lift

the spinning blades allows the air to flow faster over the top

and our balloon helicopter has lift

lift is the main force that causes airplanes and helicopters to fly

airplanes and helicopters have specially shaped wings or blades that allow them to have lift

you can even experience lift if you stick your hand out of a moving car

and angle your hand to just the right angle

and you will feel your whole arm go up
