Because you can get yourself into a lot of trouble by using the wrong vowel sound in English words.
所以我们需要把元音说对 对吧
So we need to fix that, right?

OK. If you’ve watched my IPA introduction video,

then you’ll know exactly what all these symbols mean.
这是国际语音字母表
This is the International Phonetic Alphabet,
在我教学生英语发音的时候 我经常用到它
and I use it a lot when I’m teaching pronunciation to my English students.
如果你不知道它们是什么 没关系！
If you don’t know what they are, that’s OK!

OK. So these are all the English vowel sounds.
其它的是元音中的双元音
These other ones are diphthongs which are also vowel sounds

所以这是所有的英语元音
So there are all of these English vowel sounds
但是只有五个英语元音字母
but only five English vowel letters:
A E I O U
a, e, i, o, u.
怎么实现的呢
How does that work?
让我们使用字母E举个例子
Let’s use the letter E as an example.
当你在英语单词里看见字母E
When you see the letter E in an English word.
它可能有几种不同的发音:
It can be pronounced in a few different ways:
在”egg”中发短音/e/
Short /e/ as in egg.
而在”she”中发长音/i:/
Long /i:/ as in she.
在”cafe”里是重读音节
Long with an accent, as in café.
或者非重读音节的元音/ə/
Or the lazy schwa sound /ə/.
发音是非重读的/ə/ 比如“eleven” “eleven”
The sound is so lazy, /ə/ like eleven, eleven.
我们看这组英语的发音
So let’s look at this group of English sounds.
记住它们的读音 而不是英语字母
Remember that their sounds, not English letters.
现在 我们来看前两个音标:
Now let’s look at the first two sounds:
/i:/和/ɪ/
/i:/ and /ɪ/
这些元音给英语学习者带来了一些困扰
These sounds caused a few problems for English learners.
长音/i:/和短音/ɪ/
/i:/ and /ɪ/
让我们来看看这个例子: beach
Let’s look at this example: beach.
这个单词中有长元音/i:/ “beach”
It has the long vowel sound in this word: /i:/–beach.
如果你把长元音发错
If you mispronounce this long vowel sound
读成短音/ɪ/ 你就会说bitch
and use the short ‘e’ sound you’ll say bitch
那是个粗鲁的词 “beach” “each”
That’s a rude word. beach, each.
这里有另一个例子: “sheet” “sheet”
Here’s another example: sheet, sheet.
它发长元音
It uses the long vowel sound,
但是如果你不小心发成短元音 你将会说成“大便”
but if you accidentally use the short vowel sound you’ll say shit.
那也是一个非常粗鲁的词语
That is also a really rude word.
所以长元音和短元音在英语中非常重要
So long vowel sounds and short vowel sounds are important in English.
短元音/ɪ/ /ɪ/
The short sound is /ɪ/ /ɪ/,
例子有“hit” “sing” “bit” “which” “disc”
hit, sing, bit, which, disc.
长元音/i:/
The long vowel sound is /i:/,
“meat” “eat” “beach” “sheet” “believe”
meat, eat, beach, sheet, believe.
接下来我们有元音/ʊ/
Next we have the vowel sound /ʊ/.
你会在这些单词中听到 像“book” “cook” “sugar”
You’ll hear that in words like book, cook, sugar.
然后我们有长元音/u:/
And then we have the longer sound /u:/.
你会听到这个元音在这些单词中:
You’ll hear this sound in words like
“you” “to” “shoe” “who” “computer”
you, to, shoe, who, computer.

Let’s move on！
同样元音/ɪ/和元音/e/也很容易混淆
It’s also easy to confuse the /i/ vowel sound with the short /e/ vowel sound.
/e/ “egg” “ten” “left” “excellent”
/e/, egg, ten, left, excellent.
接下来我们有元音/æ/ /æ/
Below that we have /æ/ /æ/.
你会在以下单词中听到这个发音: “cat” “flat” “compact” “that”
You’ll hear this sound in words like cat, flat, compact, that.
现在我们来看中间的元音
Lets go through the middle now.
下一个我们将说到我最喜欢的元音
Next we have my favorite sound.
在英语中它是非重读的
It’s the lazier sound in English.
同时 在英语中它是最普遍的
It’s also the most commonly heard sound in English.
你会经常听到它 /ə/ /ə/ “today” “teacher” “the” “around”
You’ll hear it a lot. /ə/ /ə/. today, teacher, the, around.
然后是元音/ɜ:/ /ɜ:/
Then there’s /з:/ /з:/
例子有: “her” “word” “first” “work” “bird”
as in her, word, first, work, bird.
要注意的是 不同的字母会有相同的发音
Notice that the same English sound can be used for all of those different letters.
比如:单词“her” “work”和“first”
In that example, all the words: her, work and first
字母不一样 却有相同的元音发音
use different letters, but make the same sound.
这就是为什么国际音标表可以帮你更好的进行单词的发音
That’s why learning the IPA is going to help you pronounce English words better.
然后是我们的元音/ɔ:/ /ɔ:/
Then we have the /ɔ:/ sound, /ɔ:/
你可以听到这些单词的发音
You can hear this word pronounced in
“or” “for” “bought” “perform” “saw”
or, for, bought, perform, saw.
接下来我们从元音/æ/到元音/ʌ/
Underneath we move from the /æ/ sound to /ʌ/, /ʌ/.
你可以在这些单词中听到这个元音:
you can hear this sound in words like
“cup” “but” “butter” “truck”
cup, but, butter, truck.
然后是/ɑ:/ /ɑ:/
Then there’s the /ɑ:/sound, /ɑ:/.
在单词“far” “part” 和“heart”中发/ɑ:/
/ɑ:/ as in far, part and heart.
接下来是/ɒ/ /ɒ/
Then we have the /ɒ/ sound, /ɒ/.
你可以听到这个元音在以下单词中
You can hear this sound in
“not” “on” “log” “God” “forgot”
not, on, log, God, forgot.
