– Scale and Coin is a business society at Duke,
where we get together a lot of different people
from different backgrounds,
and different majors to learn about business.
我是Eileen Yao 在杜克读大三
I’m Eileen Yao, I’m a Junior at Duke,
and the President of Scale and Coin.
Hi I’m Jeffery,
I’m from Auckland, New Zealand
and I’m a Freshman studying Economics, and Computer Science,
and I’m currently an active member of Scale and Coin.
– Hi, my name is Courtney Schwartz.
I’m a Sophomore at Duke,
and I’m the Director of New Member Education and Training in Scale and Coin.
嗨 我是Nick Hibshman
– Hi, my name is Nick Hibshman,
and I’m currently a Freshman here at Duke University.
Within Scale and Coin, I am the Chair of Finance.
嗨 我是Gary Wang
– Hi, my name is Gary Wang.
I’m a current Sophomore at Duke,
and I’m the VP of Membership and Marketing for Scale and Coin.
嗨 我是Michael Tan
– Hi, I’m Michael Tan.
I’m a first year student here at Duke University,
and I’m also the Fundraising Chair for Scale and Coin.
– My name is Ricky Martinez-Cid,
and I’m a Senior at Duke University.
In the past, I’ve been VP Social,
and VP Professional for Scale and Coin.
– [Courtney Schwartz] Scale and Coin is definitely the
premier business society at Duke.
So, I really wanted to learn from upper classman,
and acquire more skills that would help to
prepare me for the interview process.
– So, in high school, I did a lot of business-related things.
So, I took classes and did competitions,
and I knew I wanted to carry that interest into college.
And I found Scale and Coin,
and I immediately knew that I wanted to join them,
because it was this group of incredibly driven
individuals that had unique professional interests.
– So, initially when I got to Duke,
I didn’t really know what I wanted to do long term,
and I knew that the best way to find out about that,
as a student was really just to find out from people who had
done it in the past and were older than me.
– I came in and I really enjoyed the community that
I felt there.
I’ve learned a lot,
and I basically just wanted to have a
really diverse range of experiences,
结交共同成长 相互学习 一起玩耍的人
and be with people that I could grow, learn, and play with.
– [Jeffery] I went to the Activities Fair,
which is like a Freshman event where all the
different clubs on campus are set up.
And then, I just got one of their fliers.
I went to an information session,
and then decided to rush it.
– I came into Duke thinking I
was gonna be a Math Professor,
and then that all changed when I talked to my friend,
Trishul back in one of my houses.
And he really talked me into rushing for Scale and Coin,
and I kind of fell in love with the process.
– So, the rush process.
There are events that are social,
and events that are business-orientated.
For example, you would go to eat dinner with people,
grab tacos or ice cream.
Or there’s also professional events,
such as, you have an interview,
like a resume workshop,
where people help you with you CV,
and stuff like that.
After training, when you’re just a normal member,
the main thing is, every Thursday, we have a GBM.
– We have a weekly meeting.
It’s called the GBM, General Body Meeting.
And basically, people from outside of Duke will come in,
give a presentation,
or even people within Scale and Coin will give a
presentation on their specific fields.
– [Eileen Yao] We have about 80 members in Scale and Coin.
So, new members, before they join or as they’re joining,
they go through a training process of six weeks where
every week they do a different challenge
in a different sector of business.
So, there’s a start up challenge,
a consulting challenge, a stock pitch.
So, they get to learn about a lot of different types of
business that they might not have been exposed to before.
– Scale and Coin is good in that it connects you with
a lot of upperclassmen who can really mentor you.
So, in Scale and Coin,
we have a big little system with families.
And so, you have someone paired with you who
is directly there to support you.
– Yeah, so the big little system really
adds to our community feel.
It’s kind of a mentorship,
but really just an older friend who can guide you
through, not only job things,
but social things, or class things,
or really whatever you need.
And so, having a personal mentor like that,
I feel, really helps us feel more like a family.
– I think it’s shaped my experience
in a number of different ways.
But we are all really friends with each other,
so it’s definitely shaped my social life in that way.
另外 他们知道什么是对 什么是错
In addition to that, they know what’s right and wrong,
and how to approach it.
So, it’s really helped me by having these friends as
resources to help me with my professional goals.
– To be honest, Scale and Coin gets stuff done.
A lot of different fraternities on campus,
it’s mainly about the social scene,
and not really about the work behind it.
But the people in Scale and Coin are
not afraid of hard work.
We get out.
We go to networking sessions.
We get stuff done.
And we go to some great places after Duke.
– I joined Scale and Coin my very
first semester on campus,
and I’ve been with them ever since.
And it’s been one of those groups where you join,
and you just feel a real sense of community,
– Well, it’s definitely given me a sense of direction,
in that, coming into college,
a lot of people don’t know what they
really want to do with their life.
And, through Scale and Coin,
I learned a lot about different fields,
比如金融 投资银行业 管理咨询学
like Finance, Investment Banking, Consulting.
And, more than just professionally,
it’s give me so many skills.
I’ve learned how to do so many things,
like evaluations, case interviews.
But, more than just professionally,
personally, it’s helped me grow by letting me
meet people who I really connected with.
– Of all the business societies at Duke,
Scale and Coin prides itself
on being a social community,
because whereas you can learn
business skills in lot of places,
I really care about Scale and Coin being a place where
people can find their community, a family,
and a place where people really care about them.
And where they can have fun,
outside of just learning how to write a resume,
or how to do interviews,
things like that.
