-Neighbours? Very good. Well we will try to be neighbourly, too.

And when we say a film is alive

that is the part of what we mean.

There is subtleties of storytelling and behaviour
不只是我们看到 还有忽视的的地方
not just where we look but where we don’ t look.

And as you watch Drive you start to see the pattern.

Almost every shots has a compositional balance

between left and right, and also top and bottom.

A quadrant.

At first, this might seem restrictive.

But using this basic tool, watch how the director

takes conventional things and does unconventional things.

As the driver enters, he is up in the top-left.
所以自然我们会假定下一个镜头会有另一个人在屏幕右上位置
So naturally we assume the next shot will have the other person in the top-right.
但出乎意料 而是在右下
But instead…
当镜头推近 我们看到两个角色
…when the shot move closer, we get two characters
像这样靠近 后面有大量空档
short-sided like this, with tons of space behind them.
即使他们想要交谈
Even though they want to talk,
-”抱歉” -“小心点”
-Sorry.-Be cared.
其他的障碍阻隔着他们
There are other obligations.
一旦两个人面对面
Once the two men confront each other, notice that
注意他们占据了同一象限 他们的眼睛在同一位置
they occupy the same quadrant with their eyes at the same spot

because they are fighting for the same positon.

Meanwhile, Irene is framed top-right

The scene finally pays off in this image

balanced between top-left and bottom-right.
