Does the Artist Matter? | AmorSciendi

Cherubs, this is a painting of St Christopher.
That’s about all I know about it.
I don’t know who painted it. No one does.
I don’t know when it was painted,
though I can narrow it down to the early middle of the sixteenth century.
I don’t know who commissioned it, or why it was painted.
I don’t know much… but that’s not going to stop me from talking about it,
because I think it’s pretty.
OK, so let’s start with the mythology behind St. Christopher.
The story goes that the uncommonly strong Christopher
set off to work for the mightiest man in the world.
and I should mention here that
some of the early stories have him with the head of a dog,
but not here.
Anyway he worked for kings, but they were afraid of the devil.
The devil in turn was afraid of the cross.
He then sought mentorship from an old hermit on how to serve Christ.
The Hermit told him to fast and pray
but Christopher wasn’t about to do that,
he couldn’t figure it out.
The Hermit then suggested that Christopher help carry people
across a rather dangerous nearby river.
This is how he became the patron saint of bridge builders
and other professions dealing with public transportation.
You might notice St. Christopher in your next taxi cab.
One day,Christopher is asked to carry an infant across the water.
As he crosses the weight of the child increases dramatically
and upon delivering the child to the opposite shore
he realizes that he was not only carrying the weight of the world,
but it’s creator as well.
And that’s the scene being illustrated in this painting.
Now my love of bridges and technology that connects people
is well documented,
and Christopher is a mythological figure closely associated with those things
but that’s not why I like this painting…
I don’t think…
I like it because I like the message and the composition.
First, the message is that you should use your talents to serve others,
whatever they may be.
For Christopher that meant his height and strength.
It says that in helping a few people cross a dangerous river
he was helping the whole of the universe.
The painting makes the connection between those seemingly small acts of service
and the larger impact to they may have.
And the composition backs this up.
The connection between the micro behavior and the macro consequence is clear here.
Look at that sixteenth century vision of the universe on his shoulders
with the earth at its center.
Look at the colors it contains.
Now move your eyes down
and you’ll find a similar globe formed by Christopher’s robes.
The colors are the same.
Heck, the color of earth and where it appears in these circles
is nearly identical.
The small act causes Christopher’s robes to billow out
and mirror exactly the map of the larger universe.
Take care of the people in front of you and you’ll take care of the universe,
this seems to say,and I kind of like that.
And those two circles appear directly in the center of its composition
and helps balance the viewing experience.
There is also a good interaction between the static elements of this painting
and the dynamic elements of this painting.
Much of the painting seems to move in a lazy way,
from the hermit to the fish,
but the protagonist takes these long dynamic strides.
This tension is perhaps best demonstrated
in the fact that he seems to be using a tree,
roots and all, as a walking stick…
and again, this tension matches the theme.
It draws our attention to systems and changes that move quickly
and systems and changes that move more slowly.
Anytime the compositional elements of a painting reinforce the message,
that’s a good painting
regardless of who may have painted it.
OK, this video was inspired by question I read in some resources
for a class I’m teaching this year called Theory of Knowledge.
The question was,
“To what extent is the value of art defined by the name of the artist who created it?”
This video is my answer, what’s yours?
