今天 我做的这个视频我之前从没做过
Today, I’ve got a video that I’ve never really done before.
就我所知 我还没有讲过写作
I’ve never really spoken about writing, as far as I know.
因此 这个视频是大家强烈要求的
So, this one has been highly requested.
我知道你们中的很多人都在考雅思
I know a lot of you are doing your IELTS exams,
因此我主要有7个小窍门
so I have got seven top tips
来提高你的写作水平
that are going to help you improve your writing.
首先 开始之前 我要感谢

因为你真的很需要

有人能检查你的写作

所以 在Lingoda你的个人课程上
So, in your private lessons on Lingoda,
你可以让他们
you can mention that you’d like them
看看你的写作
to look at your writing,
然后你就知道在那个课程上你应该关注写作的哪些方面了
and that’s what you can focus on for that lesson.

好 开始我们的课程
Let’s get started with the lesson.
我的第一个提高写作的窍门
So, my first tip for improving your writing
是用词简单
is keep it simple.
我知道这个很明显
Now, I know this seems really, really obvious,
但我总是对我学生说 正确的简单表达比
but I always say to my students simple done accurately
错误的复杂表达好
is better than complicated done inaccurately.
也就是说 正确简单的表达
In other words, it’s better to keep things simple
比错误复杂的表达
and do it well, rather than over-complicate everything
要好的多
and do it badly.
所以 在英语写作考试中
So, in English writing exams,
你想炫耀你的英语技能
you want to show off your English,
但是你想展示炫耀的是你正确的英语
but you want to show off your accurate English,
而不是那些你不知道的
not all this English that you don’t know
或是还没学到的英语
or haven’t learnt yet.
好 这就延伸出了我的第二点
Now, that leads me on to point number two.
为了在你的写作中避免错误
In order to avoid making mistakes in your writing,
掌握一套能在考试中使用的
it’s a really, really good idea
短语或是关键词
to have a collection of set phrases and keywords
是非常好的
that you can use in that exam.
所以 我的第二个建议是 准备关键短语词组
So, my tip number two is prepare key phrases.
你必须要注意这个
Now, you do have to be careful with this.
你不想写出来的东西是不确定的
You don’t want to rehearse what you’re going to write,
但是你绝对想有一套
but you do want to have a nice selection of things
你需要的时候就能用到的写作表达
that you could possible say if the time arises.
特别是在雅思考试中
Now, especially on the IELTS exam,
我知道你们中的很多人在学这个
and I know a lot of you are studying for this
但是这个真的对任何学术写作考试适用
but this really goes for any academic writing exam,
你得准备好连接词和关键短语词组
you want to have linking words and key phrases prepared.
现在 我将给你们一个列表
Now I’m going to give you a list
在列表里 有针对每个点举出的两个例子
with two examples for each point.
这个列表没有涵盖所有须知
It doesn’t cover everything that you need to know,
但是如果你把列表吃透了
but if you study everything in the list,
那么对于英语写作考试的准备
you will be much, much more prepared
已经非常充实了
for your English writing exam.
所以 注意啦 如果关于每个点 你觉得
So, pay attention, and if there’s any point that you think,
我可以拓展这个点
“I really could expand on that,”
那么去深入了解调查 准备妥当
go and do your research, and prepare yourself.
你要保证你有很多不同的方式
You want to make sure that you have a variety
去表达
of different ways to …
比较 in the same wayat the same time
compare: “in the same way,” “at the same time,”
对比 on the contraryhowever
contrast: “on the contrary,” “however,”
举例子 for instance to illustrate
give examples: “for instance,” “to illustrate,”
发表观点 from my perspective
give your opinion: “from my perspective,”
from my point of view
“from my point of view,”
普遍化 overallall things considered
generalise: “overall,” “all things considered,”
表达确定 undoubtedly of course
to express certainty: “undoubtedly,” “of course,”
表达部分同意 in a wayto some extent
to express partial agreement: “in a way,” “to some extent,”
表达原因 owing todue to
to show cause: “owing to,” “due to,”
表达结果 for this reasonconsequently
to show effect: “for this reason,” “consequently,”
表达时间 to begin withfollowing this
to mark time: “to begin with,” “following this,”
更多信息 furthermoremoreover
to add information: “furthermore,” “moreover,”
表达条件 unlessprovided that
to express condition: “unless,” “provided that,”
结尾 in summaryin short
and to conclude: “in summary,” “in short.”
那个只是个非常简短的列表
So that’s just a very brief list
向你展示了你准备英语写作考试时
showing you exactly what you need to study
需要学习的东西
to be fully prepared for any English writing exam.
好 第三点
Now, point number three, and definitely,
绝对是针对学术写作的
definitely, definitely for academic writing,
或者说是 英语考试或是大学文章
i.e. English tests or university pieces,
别用简略词
do not use contractions.
在学术写作中 这句话用do not 还是用don’t表达呢
Or is that don’t use contractions?
cannot的缩略是can’t
So, cannot to can’t,
do not的缩略是don’t
do not to don’t,
shall not的缩略是shan’t
shall not to shan’t,
I am的缩略是I’m 这些都是缩略词的例子
I am to I’m, these are all examples of contractions,
你的写作考试中 你要避免这些
and in your writing exams you want to avoid these.
我知道你们真的 真的 真的
I know that you guys really, really, really
想简写单词
want to keep your word count down
因为你有字数限制
because you are restricted,
你又想最大限度的展示自己的水平
and you want to show off as much as you possibly can,
但是我有许多小窍门 可以减少单词数量
but I’ve got lots of tips for reducing your word count
所以确保你自己不要
coming up, so make sure that you do not feel tempted
在学术写作中使用缩略词
to include contractions in your academic writing.
窍门4 减少字数
So, tip number four, reduce your word count.
尽可能少用词
Use as few words as possible.
意思完全相反是吧 因为我刚刚告诉你
Completely contradictory, because I’ve just told you
你不能使用缩略词
that you should not use contractions.
但是我真的在这个大窍门里
But I’ve got some really, really good mini tips
有很多很好的小窍门来能帮助你减少字数
within this big tip to help you keep your word count down
提高英语水平
and your English level up.
第一个就是避免自重词
The first one is avoid these dead weight words
像 very so a lot really
like “very,” “so,” “a lot,” “really.”
我之前在视频里提到过
I have mentioned this before in a video,
但是如果你想卖弄你的英语
but if you want to show off your English,
避免这些 这些都是无意义的
avoid these; they’re pointless.
在英文里 他们是没用的热量
They are empty calories in English.
用其他意义强烈的词去替代它们
Replace them, instead, with a strong word.
因此 不说really happy
So instead of saying “really happy,”
而说 I am elated(兴高采烈)
I would say, “I am elated.”
不说 so scared 而说 terrified
Instead of saying “so scared,” I would say “terrified.”
好吗
Okay?
所以 通过使用意义强烈的词 避免这些无聊的词
So, by using strong words and avoiding these boring words,
你可以很大程度上减少字数
you can reduce your word count by a fair bit.
另一个减少字数但是
Now, another way to really reduce your word count
真的提高写作质量的方式
but really improve the quality of your writing
就是避免使用 there is 和there are
is avoiding “there is” and “there are.”
我们都想尽可能清楚的表达
We want everything to be as clear as possible,
有时 there is 和 there are
and sometimes “there is” and “there are”
只是句子的填充 只是增加句子的字数
can act as fillers; they add extra words to our sentences.
我给你个例子
So, I’m going to give you an example
这样你就清楚这个并记得
so you can see this and bear it in mind
下次写学术写作时避免这些了
next time you’re doing an academic piece of writing.
句子1 我们可能遇到很多问题
Sentence one: there are many problems that we may encounter.
There are many problems that we may encounter
There are many problems that we may encounter.
句子2 我们可能遇到很多问题
Sentence two: We may encounter many problems.
We may encounter many problems
We may encounter many problems.
第一句有8个单词
The first sentence has eight words.
第二句有5个单词
The second sentence has five words.
你减少了用词 而且提高了
You have reduced your word count, and you have increased
写作质量和写作清晰度
the quality and the clarity of your writing.
因此 确保你的下次考试中使用这个窍门呦
So, make sure you apply this in your next exam.
第五个窍门 阅读
Number five, read …
合适的文献
the right documents.
阅读合适的写作材料
Read the right pieces of writing.
我知道你们许多人喜欢在业余时间读书
I know many of you like to read in your spare time,
你们喜欢读书 只是为了娱乐
you like to do it for fun,
你们许多人读英文书
and a lot of you will read books in English,
这对提高拼写和词汇量都是
which is amazing for improving you spelling
很有益的
and improving your vocabulary as well.
但是如果你想努力
But if you’re trying to get a good score
在学术写作考试中取得好成绩的话
in an academic writing exam,
你可能没阅读合适的材料
you might not be reading the right kind of thing.
看一下他们要求你写
Look at the potential pieces of writing
什么类型的写作
that they’re going to ask you to do.
他们要求你写的是文章 报告 还是论文
Are they asking you to write article, reports, essays?
可能这三类他们都要求你写
Maybe they’re asking you to write all three.
如果是的 那么去阅读这三类写作
If they are, read all three.
你需要上网或是去图书馆
You need to go online or go to your library
阅读文章 报告
and read articles, read reports,
阅读论文和评论
read essays, read reviews.
做任何你能做的来让自己熟悉
Do everything you can to familiarise yourselves
写作的所有类型
with all the styles of writing.
窍门6 这个你在学校里听到很多次了
Number six is one that you will have heard in school
但是 身为老师好多年的我
so many times; but, I’ve worked as a teacher
很头痛那些学生犯的低级错误
for many, many years, and I get so frustrated
他们明明知道他们错在哪
with silly, stupid mistakes
却依然会重犯这些错误
that I know that my students know.
他们交谈时不会出现这些错误
They don’t make these mistakes when they’re speaking,
但是为什么他们写作时就出现了呢
so why do they make them when they’re writing?
为此我讲了很多节课 但是毫无改善
So many times I’ve gone and I’ve prepared a lesson
因为我在我学生的写作中看到了一些
because I’ve seen that there were some very clear mistakes
非常明显的错误
in my students’ writing.
我备课 去纠正这些错误
And I prepare a lesson to correct this mistake,
当我上课的时候 他们说
and when I go to teach it they say,
老师 我们已经知道这个了 这个简单过头了
“But teacher, we already know this; this is baby stuff.”
因为他们不检查他们的写作
And it’s because they don’t check their work.
我有个很明显的例子
I have a clear example of this.
我曾经做过校对
I used to work as a proofreader.
在文件发去出版社之前
I used to check through documents
我会检查它们
before they got sent off to publishers
确保它们都正确
to make sure that they were all correct,
没有拼写错误
that there was no spelling mistakes,
没有语法错误
there were no grammar mistakes,
没有任何错误 它们都很完美
there was nothing, nothing wrong, they were all perfect.
工作的过程中 我很吃惊
And I was amazing at doing this.
我放眼看去 能从一个文件中
I could get every single mistake.
挑出每一个错误
Just by looking at a document from a distance
我可以挑出那些错误
I could pick out those errors.
然而 如果你在instagram上加我了
However, if you follow me on Instagram,
你会看到我总是有拼写和语法
you will see that I make spelling and grammar mistakes
错误
all the time.
为什么呢
Why?
因为我不检查 我不检查我的文字
Because I don’t check; I don’t check my writing.
我是个土生土长说英语的人 我也会出现拼写错误
I am a native English speaker, and I make spelling mistakes.
就算 许多错误是因为手机的自动纠正功能
Granted, many of them are due to auto-correct on my phone,
我一直在与这个功能抗衡
which I am battling with.
但是许多错误还是我的错
But a lot of them are my fault.
我不检查它们 所以我不知道
And I don’t check them, so I don’t see them.
我知道当你结束考试的时候
I know when you finish an exam, you’re like,
你会觉得 好 我这题写完了 可以做下个题了
“Ugh, I’m done; I want to move on to the next question,”
但本来仅通过去复查你的文章句子
but you can avoid so many point deductions
你就可以避免很多的失分的
just by checking through your work,
所以请一定把这个点作为你的绝对优先的项目
so please, please, please, make it your absolute priority.
我个人认为 你写少些 多检查会好很多
I personally think it’s much better if you write less
字数少些 准确度就更高些
and check more; fewer words, higher accuracy.
我知道通常 相比于准确性 我更推崇流利度
And I know normally I promote fluency over accuracy,
但是不适用于写作考试呦
but not in writing exams.
写作考试中 你要完美
In writing exams, you want perfection.
好 第7点可能是里面最相关的也是最难的
Now, number seven is perhaps the most relevant
特别是当你在
and the most difficult of all, especially if you’re in
世界上特别偏远的地方时
really remote parts of the world.
第7点就是 写并检查
Number seven is write and get it checked.
写并检查
Write and get it checked.
不幸的是 检查比它看起来
And unfortunately, the getting it checked thing
要难很多
is a lot harder than it seems.
你想尽可能多的写
You want to write as much as possible,
当然 也要检查呦
checking it, of course.
当我学生交5篇论文给我时
It used to really annoy me when my students
我就很烦检查它们
would come in with five essays.
我很高兴他们完成了论文
I was so happy that they’d done that,
但是当我看到有那么多
but then I saw that they’d made loads and loads
愚蠢的错误时 我就想
of stupid mistakes, and I just thought,
啊 为什么你们不检查啊
“Ugh, why didn’t you check it?
我只是一次又一次的纠正相同的问题
“I’m just correcting the same thing over and over again.”
但是尽可能多的写 并检查
But write as much as you can, check it,
然后看看有没有人可以给你纠正
and then see if you can find somebody to correct it.
我不是说 去找个完全不认识的人
Now, I’m not saying find a complete stranger.
应该找一个有兴趣纠正写作的人
It’s got to be in their interest to correct it as well.
我个人认为 你去网上 随便找个老师
I personally think it’s very unlikely
还乐于免费给你检查写作
that you’re going to find a random teacher on the internet
这件事不太可能
that will be willing to check your writing for free.
然而 有很多服务和笔友网站
However, there are lots of services and pen pal sites
是可以互相交换的
if it’s like a mutual exchange.
如果你找到想学你语言的人 同时
If you find somebody who wants to learn your language
他们可以帮助你提高英语
and they can help you with your English,
那么你可以这样做
then you can do that.
或者 我提到的 去服务网站比如Lingoda
Or, like I mentioned, on services such as Lingoda,
你可以一个小时都在分析你已经写好的
and you can just have a straight hour of analysing writing
并且发过去的写作
that you’ve already done and already sent them.
但是我要说 特别是对我的年轻观众说
But I will say, especially to my younger viewers,
当你在网上与人交流去练习英语时
really, really, really be careful when you’re contacting
一定要小心
people online to practise your English.
确保是个值得信赖的人 因为
Make sure it’s a trustworthy person, because there are
有许多坏人想跟你说话
so many predators that want to talk to you,
特别是年轻女孩 说是练习英语
especially young girls, to “practise their English,”
其实并不是
and it doesn’t actually turn out to be a English practise.
是完全不同的事情
It turns out to be something quite different,
所以一定要小心
so please, please, please be careful.
如果你有钱 你有时间
If you’ve got the funds, and if you’ve got the time,
请个适当的老师 付钱给他们来帮助你
get a proper teacher and pay them to help you.
还有没有其它安全的方式让你获得适当的技能
Is there any way that you’re going to be guaranteed
适当的资历
the proper skills, and the proper qualifications,
和适当的鼓励呢
and also the proper incentive.
为什么网上随便一个陌生人
Why would a random stranger on the internet
想帮你提高你的写作水平
want to help you with your writing?
是不是他们有自己的目的
What’s in it for them?
别忘了想想吧
Always think about that.
好的 大家 这就是今天的课程
