– If you’ve ever wondered why I have a beard,
it’s because without it I would have
an infinite loop of face.
Facial hair has evolved a lot over the last 100 years,
from beards to mustaches to being oh-so-clean shaven,
all the way back to beards again.
And because of the popularity of facial hair,
believe it or not, there are a lot of misunderstandings
that come along with it.
Well, in this video I’m going to take the seven
most commonly believed myths that you likely
still believe about the hair of the face
and explain the truth behind them.
Whether you’ve got a mustache or a beard
or you just know someone with one,
this is some useful information that you’re
going to want to take with you.
So without further ado, this is seven myths
you still believe about facial hair.
If your beard doesn’t grow fast, it never will.
It’s often said that if you’re trying to grow a beard
and don’t see much progress in a few weeks,
it’s best to call it off and just shave.
Ah, but this is simply not true.
On average, men see just under six inches
of facial hair growth in a year,
也就是说 每个月大概生长半英寸（1.27 cm）
which is around half an inch per month.
Additionally, every person is different,
and depending on a number of factors,
which we’ll get to in the next myth,
you may grow hair faster or slower than average.
So if you really want a beard,
just wait it out a little longer.
第二个 如果你20多岁没有络腮胡 你以后都留不到了
If you can’t grow a beard by your 20s, you never will.
Speaking of slow growing, this myth claims
that if you’re in your 20s and still can’t
grow a full beard, you never will.
Cool story bruh.
Yes, your growth spurt might be long over
and you’re now a fully grown adult,
but that doesn’t mean that your beard
is as full as it’s every going to be.
Look at me, I’m 5’6 and I could look homeless
if I really wanted to.
According to scientist, facial hair can improve
in fullness throughout a man’s 20s and 30s,
often changing well into his middle age.
Many things can delay beard maturity,
including genes, hormones, chemicals,
and irritants your face and neck have been exposed to,
同样 不管你信不信 医疗条件也会影响
as well as, believe it or not, medical conditions.
So just because your beard is a bit patchy at 25
doesn’t mean it’ll be that way when you’re 30.
Beards are unattractive to women.
Now, here’s a myth that could hold a bit of truth
based on a few factors, but is otherwise total garbage.
First off, attractiveness is subjective,
based on the beard and those lucky enough to see that beard.
But it is subjective, and some people just hate beards.
I mean, they’re pretty much dead to me,
but they are who they are.
Then of course, there are those who love beards,
no matter how scruffy and unkempt it is,
which brings me to my second point.
Beard attractiveness also depends
on whether it’s properly groomed.
A study done in Australia showed that women
were most attracted to an intermediate level of beard,
kind of like what I got rockin’ right now,
他们还发现 那些拥有浓密 饱满大胡子的男人
while they also found that men with full, luscious beards
were perceived to be better protectors
and even better fathers.
Beards make your face hotter in the summer.
Ah, beards, the natural scarf.
Great to have in the winter, but what about the summer?
噢 天啊 就像戴了顶帽子一样
Oh, God, it’s like a hat on my face.
Well, many believe that if they keep their beards
through the warmer months, their faces will sweat
and often become irritated.
But cool your faces, people,
because I’m going to douse you with some icy cold truth.
Facial hair can actually cool you in the summer.
See, beards and mustaches act as shade
for your delicate yet manly face.
When it comes to your beard keeping you warm in the winter,
it’s not actually insulating you,
it’s merely protecting your face from the bitter wind.
You can lengthen your beard by pulling on it.
嘿 我试过了 这完全是个谣言
Hey, I looked it up, and this is actually a myth.
Yes, this is, believe it or not, a popular old wives’ tale.
This myth says that by gently pulling on the whiskers
on your face, you will help them grow faster and longer
by encouraging them to grow in a particular direction.
当然 我说过 无论你怎么拉它
Of course, as I’ve said, it takes time to grow
no matter how many times you pull on your ‘stache.
This holds true for other body parts as well.
To prove it, studies have shown that the average man
touches his facial hair up to 700 times a day,
usually unconsciously, and in no circumstances
has it ever seemed to encourage anything
beyond the look that he’s deep in thought.
Beards are itchy.
Many people see hair on someone’s face
and instantly believe that it must be itchy all the time.
This leads to many men, likely many of you
watching right now, to avoid growing facial hair.
However, the truth is that most men either have
very little itching or none at all,
and for the few that do, it’s usually pretty tolerable,
and most often, passes in a week or two,
especially since, after the stubble phase,
facial hair becomes much, much softer
so it seldom scratches or irritates.
Keeping your beard clean will help avoid
让你远离烦恼 用一点胡子油（ beard oil）
with irritation, and also, a little beard oil.
I use it.
It’s like a baby ass.
Having a beard won’t get you a job.
Just because you have a job interview coming up
doesn’t mean that you have to shave.
Many people believe that having a mustache
would make them seem immature and untrustworthy,
but a poll conducted in 2008 for The Guardian,
a British newspaper, showed that 61% of people found
that the mustache is gentlemanly and sophisticated.
When it comes to facial hair in the workplace,
there are a few jobs, such as working with food,
where having facial hair is frowned upon.
Trust me, I used to serve food
and I had to wear a beard net.
It’s the ugliest thing in the world.
But otherwise, few employers discriminate
against a nicely groomed beard or mustache.
In fact, having a beard may leave a good impression,
creating the image that you have more experience
than you actually possess.
See how smart I look?
And that’s it for this video, guys.
