Unicorns aren’t real, although we dearly wish they were.
Here are five true facts about unicorns.
Number one– unicorns in Western literature
first appeared in 5th century BCE.
A Greek historian/physician, Ctesias, wrote about a beast
描写了一种白色身体 紫色头 多色角的野兽
with a white body, purple head, and multicolored horn.
His description served as the basis for the whole unicorn
legend, which was especially popular in the Middle
Ages and the Renaissance era.
Number two– powder from unicorn horns
was considered a medicine.
It was in the same realm as goat’s blood, toads,
and powdered mummies.
It was rare but powerful and could
治愈发热 瘟疫 中毒和
cure fever, plague, poisonings, and delusions
of believing in unicorns.
Its usefulness as a medicinal agent
was finally disproved in the 18th century.
Number three– unicorns are the national animal of Scotland.
You can see them in the country’s coat of arms.
他们是无辜 纯洁 力量
They are a legendary symbol of innocence, purity, power,
and life itself.
During the 1400s in Scotland, there
was even a gold coin called the Unicorn
that was worth 18 shilling scots.
Number four– antique unicorn horns
are actually just narwhal teeth.
The narwhal is an Arctic whale with one
or two long teeth sticking out of its head.
Northern traders were able to pass these teeth off
as unicorn horns and sell them for wild amounts of money.
Queen Elizabeth I and other royalty
held them as prized possessions.
Number five– the unicorn may be real after all.
In 2008, a deer was spotted near Tuscany, Italy,
with a single pointed horn coming out
of the center of his head.
Apparently, it’s some sort of genetic mutation.
But some people see the deer as proof
that unicorns do, in fact, exist,
while other people see the deer as proof that deer exist.
