Considered one of the strangest and rarest fighting vehicles of WWII,the Kugelpanzer
was German a light reconnaissance craft.
Its name translated to”ball tank,”and its history and functionality are nearly a complete mystery.
The only Kugelpanzer ever found was believed to have been shipped to Japan and was
captured by the Russian Army in Manchuria.
Plated with 5mm of armor, the tank may have been armed with a light machine gun that
could provide defensive fire while rolling.
The largely unstudied Kugelpanzer is currently held in the Russian Kubinka Museum
listed only as”Item #37.”
No.4 横须贺MXY-7 OHKA
4 YOKOSUKA MXY–7 OHKA
The Yokusuka MXY–7 Ohka”cherry blossom”was a last–ditch rocket–powered kamikaze plane
deployed by Japan near the end of WWII.
It was essentially a one–man piloted flying bomb and was carried into battle underneath
a Mitsubishi G4M2e Model 24J bomber.
After being dropped,Ohka pilots wolud glide their craft towards US naval ships and fire
3 solid-fuel rocket engines…
…reaching speeds up to 620 mph(1,000km/h)before plowing into their target and
detonating a 2,646 lb(1,200kg)warhead.
The Ohka only hit 7 US ships, and later submarine and cave-launched versions were
never used before the end of the war.
3 WIND CANNON
Nearing defeat in WWII,the hope that a “WunderWaffe”superweapon could turn the
…including a giant compressed-air wind cannon that could fire a blast equivalent to
a small shell at invading aircraft.
The bizarre device was triggered with an explosion of hydrogen and oxygen in a sharply bent breach(seen here pointing down).
Tests showed that the invisible projectile could shatter a wooden board at a distance
of 650 feet(200 m).
A single wind cannon was reportedly deployed on a bridge across the Elbe, but it proved
to be ineffective and was a large target.
The German Krummlauf was a bent barrel modification that could be added as an
attachment to the Sturmgewehr 44.
It was produced in versions with 30 °,45° ,60°and 90° bends,although the 30°and 45°
models were the only ones widely deployed.
The bent barrel included a periscope that would allow soldiers to shoot from safe
positions around corners and over cover.
A tank model was also developed that could defend the vehicle’s blind spots and stop
close-range infantry assaults.
Bullets fired from the Krummlauf had a tendency to shatter in a shotgun effect, and the barrel typically failed after 300 rounds.
1 BOUNCING BOMB
The idea of a “bouncing bomb”was described by RAF enginner Barnes Wallis in a paper
titled”Spherical Bomb-Surface Torpedo”…
…and one such bomb,code-named Upkeep, was developed and tested with the purpose of
destroying German hydroelectric dams.
The Upkeep was a cylindrical device that needed to be dropped at 232mph(373 km/h),
60 feet(18 m)above the water.
500 rpms of backspin was added so that the bomb would skip across the surface before
sinking and exploding at the dam wall.
During Operation Chastise, the bomb breached 2 Ruhr Valley dams but the unconventional
delivery resulted in high RAF casualty rates.
