Here are four very crazy, weird ways that animals have sex.
Number one, cichlid fish often reproduce by mouth.
The female begins by laying eggs in the sand for a male
She then quickly stores them in her mouth for safekeeping,
sometimes before males even get to inseminate.
Afterwards, she may mistake spots
on a male fish’s tail for loose eggs
and will try to recapture them.
The male then inseminates inside her mouth,
ensuring that any remaining unfertilized eggs become
Number two, bedbugs mate by traumatic insemination,
which is as traumatic and painful as it sounds.
Male bedbugs will stab the female’s abdomen
with their needle-like penis and insert sperm into the wound.
The female may be targeted an average of five times this way,
sometimes by different males, which
can leave scars and cut her life short by 30%.
Number three, the right sided garter
snakes mate in balls of hundreds of snakes.
A female is found to be more attractive when
multiple males are courting her at once rather than when
As soon as she has mated, she quickly
loses her attraction and the rest of the male snakes
begin to look for another female to court.
Number four, the macaque monkeys mate
based on supply and demand.
If there are only a few females to mate with,
the male will pay for sex with her
by the currency of grooming.
However, if more females are present at the time,
it brings down the price of sex, and the males
will spend a much shorter amount of time
grooming than they would otherwise.
