– [Narrator] If you’re just out of college
or you just landed your first job,
you’re probably eager toclimb up that career ladder.
Well remember that good things take time so don’t be impatient,
but there are a few tactics
that can help put yourcareer on the fast track.
Number one, help others succeed.
If you wan na get noticed by upper management,
don’t just look out for yourself.
Support your peers, go the extra mile,
and share or give creditfreely, almost to a fault.
Trust me, your selflessnesswill not go unnoticed,
and when management is lookingfor someone to promote,
they’re gon na pick the person that the rest
of the team can get behind.
So play the bigger game and don’t just focus on your individual success.
Number two, make your boss look good.
The best way to curry favor with your boss
is not by kissing their ass orshowing off your achievements
in fact those things oftenhave the inverse effect.
Instead make them look good to their boss.
See at most companies, only 5%of tasks are truly important,
the rest is just noise.
So ask your boss what that 5% is for them,
and then keep adding value to it.
Then when it’s promotion time, your boss’s decision should be pretty clear cut.
And number three, take calculated risks.
In large part, leaders arechosen because they are seen
as innovators within the organization
and in order to innovatewithin an organization,
you have to challenge the status quo.
Now don’t just go in there and start suggesting radical changes off the bat,
get to know the organization over time,
figure out how you couldmake it better, and then work
with upper management onimplementing your ideas.
It’s that kind of ambition that often leads to career advancement.
In the end, the mostimportant thing to remember
is have patience, careersare not made overnight,
they are made over decades, good luck.
