so that he could create a recipe for milk chocolate candies.
In 1899, he developed the top-secret Hershey process.
And by 1900, he began manufacturing Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars.

We were inspired by Hershey’s dedication to quality,
long-running success and innovative spirit,
so let’s take a closer look now at one of the favorite candy producers in the world
with the 15 things you didn’t know about Hershey.
1. Hershey had two failed businesses before his first success.
The first business Milton Hershey started was a small candy shop.
After the shop was declared a failure just four years after opening,
Hershey went to Denver to learn how to make caramel candies.
Then when he started his first caramel business, that also failed.
But Hershey didn’t give up.
So right after his caramel business in Denver sunk,
he went back to Philadelphia to give it another shot.
There he started a new caramel business
which grew incredibly quickly.
Within a very short period of time,
Hershey had almost 1,400 employees,
and he started selling caramels all over America.
2. Hershey sold his caramel business for 1 million dollars.
Nowadays Hershey’s is synonymous with good chocolate,
but it wasn’t always like that.
From the start, Hershey was concentrated on making candies out of caramel,
but his trip to Chicago in 1896 was a game-changer for him.
At the 1896 World’s Columbian Exhibition in Chicago,
he was introduced to chocolate making machines for the first time.
He became so fascinated with the cocoa business
that he decided to sell his caramel plant and start making chocolate.
Eventually he sold his caramel enterprise for a solid 1 million dollars
and reinvested the money in his chocolate making business.
3. Prohibition was the golden era for Hershey’s.
Just in case you didn’t know, Prohibition was a period in US history,

包括Mr. Goodbar巧克力棒 好时糖浆和好时巧克力豆

4. More than 80 million Hershey’s Kisses are made each day.
Hershey’s Kisses have been one of the most popular candies in the world
ever since they were first introduced back in 1907.
It’s believed that the candy got its name because of the sound and motion the machine makes
when placing the chocolate on a belt.
Originally the Kisses were all hand wrapped,
but a machine was created in 1921
to automatically wrap the candy.
The Kiss foil wrapper was trademarked in 1976.
More than 80 million Hershey’s Kisses are made each day in two Hershey’s factories.
5. They designed heat-resistant chocolate for the US Army in World War II.
In 1942 during the Second World War,
production of Hershey’s Kisses was halted due to the rationing of aluminum foil.
Instead, the machines were used to create chocolate paste for the soldiers.
另外 二战期间 美国军方还给好时布置了一项特殊任务
Also, during World War II, the US Army had a very special task for Hershey’s.
They wanted a heat-resistant chocolate bar for the soldiers who were in high temperature locations.

These candy bars became so popular

Milton Hershey believed that his rival company Beechnut Gum
was going to start producing chocolate,
so he decided to be proactive and started producing chewing gum.

and lasted only until 1927,

essential parts of the gum production.
